College roommate accidentally spills soda on your child's laptop...

Reason 23 out of 100 for why immigrants can't understand how you guys share a bedroom with random strangers while you're supposed to be getting a university education.

Thoughts.... it's a roommate for next semester too...so might be awkward.

College student is an adult. No you don't ask the parents for anything. It was an accident. You can clearly afford it. Move on.

How do you know it was the roommate? Perhaps your DC decided to not tell the truth so not to get yelled at by you?

Roommate owned up to it.

Buy a water resistant PC. Most business grade notebooks (thinkpad, elitebook, etc) are water resistant.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if daughter took her roommate to small claims court a judge would 100% rule in her favor, right?

Did the kid OFFER any money? I wasn’t a rich student but I 100% would have borrowed money from my parents to at least offer to buy my roommate a new laptop.

The roommate said s/he did it? Then The roommate should definitely buy a new laptop. I'm appalled at the other answers here. Of course the roommate should replace it if s/he irrevocably damaged it. If the roommate doesn't offer then your kid, OP, should go to the RA and ask for advice/assistance and mediation with the roommate. Your kid also should ask for a single for the next semester.

This. The roommate needs to replace the laptop if the roommate broke it. How is this even a question!?!

So, where do you live while getting a degree?

The other kid should have offered immediately. It shouldn't be on your kid to ask. What has the other kid said about it?

I am guessing that your ds allowed the roommate to use his laptop? If so, that is on your son.

I was very clear with ds that he should not allow anyone else to use his laptop, and this is why.

My son dropped his gf’s laptop in a river; our homeowner’s policy paid for its value with zero deductible.

Where did this happen? Big difference to me if roommate put the soda down on your kid’s desk, and if your kid left their laptop on the coffee table where they were eating pizza and drinking soda.

Maybe the other kid can’t afford to replace it.
