Will there be Halloween this year?

Again. It won’t be canceled. It can’t be canceled. Families that don’t want to participate won’t. That’s how it will work.

Btw. I live in a community where people and even institutions regularly disregard covid rules. No one is arrested or fined. Do you think police will come out and give tickets to trick or treaters? It’s an absurd notion. Families have agency and can determine their own comfort levels.

I remember taking my kids in 2001. Between 911 and the anthrax there were few truck or treaters and it felt creepy and depressing. I think you might want to take a pass this year.

Of course it can be canceled. Don't think it will be though.

This will depend on locale sure and the particular enforcement priorities, but you can't assume all areas are as lax as yours and make a blanket statement it can't be done. There have been instances in the news of tourists being arrested in Hawaii for breaking quarantine, a parent with child ticketed at a closed playground, numerous arrests of restaurant and gym owners who open despite lockdown orders.

You can't cancel a date. October 31st will come and go like it does every year. You can't legally force people to stay in their houses and not walk around knocking on doors, for one night.

I have not seen this been proven.

^ just adding though that this doesn't mean surface transmission is at all common!

Again. It HAS been canceled, and more than once, in specific locations in the US.

Transmission “likely” occurred from the buttons.

Likely.

I haven’t heard any of the “I’m taking my kids trick or treating and you can suck it” people talking about the logistics of candy bowls. So assuming you can social distance, are you really letting your kid stick their hands in a bowl that 30 other kids stuck their hands in? How do the logistics work, exactly?

I imagine it like any other door.
Knock knock. Homeowner opens door (masked).
Kids yell (masked): Trick or treat!!!!!!
Homeowner plunks candy into kids’ bag.
Thank you!!!! they sing in unison
Off they go to the next house.
When home wipe down candy with wipes, if you’re particularly concerned.

Anyhow, that’s how we’ll do it this year. I imagine less kids, but I know homeowners in my area love Halloween and will celebrate as usual.

+1. This isn’t going to spread Coronavirus or any other virus. But that “small,” “socially distanced” backyard party people are yapping about on this thread very well might.

No one has said anything about parties on this thread. I posted about having "neighbor kids" over - sorry I didn't clarify, I met two girls my two girls are friends with. We have a big back yard, they can easily come watch a movie on the outdoor projector in costumes and be 8 feet apart.

Why do you even want it cancelled? Is it because you don’t want your children to know otters are trick or treating without out them? I know someone like this. They get very upset when others do things their children aren’t able to.

I suspect governors will not make state-wide ordinances (except maybe NJ bc it’s a hotspot), but smaller localities may. I personally am not concerned with this, as it would be impossible to cancel Halloween where I live. People simply can ignore any ordinance that is made. And they would!
