is NorthernVA doing a different thing for reopening?

This.

As the rest of the state began easing some restrictions on businesses, Northern Virginia saw a decrease in new cases Friday. And new data from the state is going to help local officials monitor signs of progress as the region looks to reopen May 29.

Very good question. We live out in Loudoun, and this decision (to push out Phase I) makes ZERO sense. Loudoun has:

Population: ~400,000
Hospitalized for COVID: 129
Deaths by COVID: 38 (29 of those in are 80 or older)

This virus impacts the elderly; isolate/test/treat/protect/focus on that demographic with all the resources possible, but let the rest of the population start to return to normalcy.

Do you want everyone from Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax flocking to Loudoun to hang out at the wineries/breweries, shopping at the outlet, and over running your parks?

We took the day off tomorrow and will be “flocking” to Stafford for wineries and dinner (all outdoor seating). Cannot WAIT.

Make sure you have reservations. Many are requiring them.

We live in Fairfax Co. My DW works at a winery in Fauquier. They are requiring reservations so there shouldn't be a "flocking" of people, but they did discuss the possibility of having to turn people away. Most of their business comes from the counties to the east of them anyhow.

I think all of VA should enter Phase 1 at the same time.

A lot of DC plates out at the wineries today. Thanks! It helps. The commonwealth can use that tax revenue!

Sad. I never thought I'd see this kind of question in the USA.

Because science. You really think that we are going to decide based on your convenience and boredom? Holy crap you are entitled.

I am now completely perplexed how rules are being applied in Virginia. I was struck by the fact that Virginia Beach beaches will be allowed to open starting on May 22, while at the same time the decks of private swim clubs will remain closed and swimming will be limited to individual lap lane swimming only. Unlike a beach which will draw from numerous states in the region, a swim club is limited to member families. Unlike a beach, pools are fenced and can limit capacity through reservations, monitor who enters and exits, can section off our pools and pool deck. We have a two page list of possible mitigation that can be implemented once our deck is allowed to open including having a non-guard monitor social distancing, and frequent cleaning. I fail to understand why under Phase 1 churches can have 50% of indoor capacity, restaurants can have 50% of their patio capacity, beaches can be open, yet private swim clubs which provide employment to local youth, outdoor activity and sun for families and can be tightly monitored, will essentially have to remain closed. Under Phase 1 rules a single family will not even be allowed to enjoy a baby pool. In comparison would it not make sense for private pools to be allowed a percentage of their normal capacity?

I have yet to hear an explanation that explains the rules applied to private swim clubs compared to the above mentioned examples. If somebody can explain these variances I would greatly appreciate it. Is it $? They sure don't seem to be applied in the name of safety. I'm pretty much done with this.

+1. And churches. If you can go to church, I should be allowed to sit at my outdoor pool.

+2. Completely arbitrary. Or why Va. Beach beaches are open but Norfolk's are not.

The distinction is that nobody is going to do the equivalent of civil disobedience as occurred at Va. Beach over the weekend at privately swim club - too easy for the authorities to crack down.

Northam is like the Jack Wolz character in the Godfather. He's been made to look ridiculous and a man in his position can't afford to look ridiculous.

So he's going to try to crack down where he can, but he won't succeed in Norfolk or in Hampton (could he withstand the optics of police going after primarily Af-Am beachgoers?)

I don't thin it's arbitrary, but there was serious lobbying by the mayor and hotel owners in Virginia Beach to open. I haven't read anything about Norfolk doing the same. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

No, Richmond has the awful problem (most serious in the Commonwealth) of deaths in residential/convalescent homes. The outlying suburbs don't have the number of care centers that Richmond does.

Nope. Henrico County, a suburb of Richmond, has the most issues with nursing home outbreaks. Canterbury was the first one (and it exploded from there) and there have been many others. Richmond has issues with the AA and Hispanic population being disproportionately affected. BUT the city of Richmond is not worse off than Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield. If you lock down one they all should have been locked down (like NOVA). It was a bizarre move for the mayor to do it at the very last minute. Seems like posturing for his gubernatorial run.

What about Lynchburg? What happened with Liberty? Haven't heard much about follow-up.
