Specifically, if passed, the Second Look Amendment Act will expand the opportunity to request re-sentencing to young adults who committed their offense between the ages of 18-25 and would hold all IRAA candidates awaiting re-sentencing in DC’s Correctional Treatment Facility. While this legislation doesn’t guarantee release, it provides for a meaningful sentence review.
Once again, under this bill no one would be guaranteed a sentence reduction or given one automatically; people would merely get a chance to prove they deserve freedom. Second look sentencing gives people an incentive to reform and improve themselves.
Great, since we’ve agreed that laws incentivize behavior, let’s impose mandatory minimums for all violent crimes and since we agree that brains are not fully formed until at least 25, let’s agree that the mandatory minimum for any violent crime will be commitment/imprisonment until at least age 25 (but may be much, much longer depending on the crime).
Deal?
