Interesting. I have two friends who began working at the NRC in the Clinton era. They have degrees in nuclear engineering and nuclear health physics. Both started out very pro-nuclear energy, but became less and less so over the years. By the late 2000s, one was very against it, and said that many people in the industry felt similarly after several years. This change in outlook made me more weary about what's going on with nuclear. |
This is not ww2 Russians oppress minorities, always have. Russia is for Russians mentally. The army conscripts from minority nation's like Latvia, Estonia were sent to help. They were not told where they were going, what was going on. Within 3 years they were dead |
| It’s just not in their nature to admit mistakes. The culture is like that. They’ll let 1,000’s burn before they admit a preventable mistake. |

Former NRC Chair Gregory Jaczko is now calling for nuclear power plants to be shut down. He notes that after the Fukushima accident that at first carbon emissions went up but that later they went down even though the Japanese shut down their nukes. The reason? Alternative energy sources took up the slack. And the two new nuclear plants being built in Georgia? Still years behind schedule and costs have mushroomed from $14 billion to $28 billion.
Also he notes that only a few of the safety improvements recommended by NRC staff after the Fukushima accident have been implemented. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/i-oversaw-the-us-nuclear-power-industry-now-i-think-it-should-be-banned/2019/05/16/a3b8be52-71db-11e9-9eb4-0828f5389013_story.html?utm_term=.395b7ce9c3df |
Yes. It crashed into the crane wire. The crash actually happened much later than was shown in the show, and wasn’t radiation related. They moved it earlier for dramatic effect. I think everything else is pretty truthful to events though. |
Thank you for the explanation. I don’t know why that bothered me so much. |
Ok, first, they are heroes. I’m not disputing that. But that video shows the helicopter hitting the cranes wires, which causes the crash. Not a helicopter disintegrating because of fire. |
| If not previously mentioned, there’s a great podcast that’s running parallel to the episodes hosted by Peter Segal (who annoys me to no end on wait wait don’t tell me, but is doing a great job with the podcast). |
The podcasts are great! |
I'm a Soviet/Former Soviet/Russian specialist, which is how I ended up working in CTR. I don't have any insight into India and Pakistan, unfortunately. (expect that the thought of those two countries having nukes is freaking terrifying) |
That’s insight enough. My father was an imagery analyst during the 80’s. He was telling me about the satellite imagery of the plant. Unreal that the Russians even went a few hours without understanding the magnitude of the disaster. |
| Highly recommend the book Plutopia by Kate Brown. She covers the earlier disaster(s) in the Soviet Union as well as the still-worrisome contaminated Hanford site in Washington State. |
| So... how long before we get fusion energy? |
|
This program is getting more terrifying every week. It stays with me.
Spoiler—— So in the last episode I am assuming they conducted a “draft”to get workers? |
|
I just watched the latest episode and I can’t sleep. It’s an amazing mini series but I can get the imagery out of my head.
I think Skargard is fabulous in the show. |
