Fast forward a year and realize we suddenly don't have the funds they thought or hoped there would be to fulfill what they were talking about. The situation has changed. So start hitting the CB hard to make it change again. |
I disagree - I believe wholeheartedly they intended a choice program and that they genuinely pursued the "built it first, then decide, and they'll come" approach. That's how APS does it. They would never have made an 800-seat neighborhood high school. That only came about after the neighborhood said bring the high school here if Glencarlyn doesn't want it, and after they finally conceded we need to be looking at a fourth high school. But they never intended to outright build it with this process. |
| The county just released it's proposed CIP (they're at the beginning of the process that we're moving toward the end of). I haven't read the whole thing, but what I've read so far appears to say the county is punting on any interim uses of the VHC property for the next ten years and on developing long-term plans for the site due to lack of funds. Seems like a prime opportunity to work out a deal with APS for APS to develop that site as a fourth neighborhood high school instead of the Career Center. |

I wish they would revisit the Kenmore site. Glencsrlyn needs to get a grip. It's the only site large enough for a 4th comprehensive high school and that is what is needed here.
If Fairfax has issues with the egress then Arlington needs to find a way to sweeten the deal to make it happen. There must be something they would want in return for cooperation on this. We have sent kids to Kenmore and are zoned for W-L and we would be delighted to have a full new high school in walking distance and would gladly send our kids there. |
Well then what was the point of jfac? They studied it and decided it had other more pressing purposes for it. |
Sure They wanted a streetcar. We don’t make friends. Pissing off our neighbors is the arlington way. |

I thought the problem with the Kenmore egress was because a new entrance off Route 50 would require VDOT approval or -alternatively- a back entrance off Manchester was likely going to require at least taking some homes by eminent domain. So far, the County has not had the stomach to kick anyone out of their home for any project (understandably). The other option is to leave things status quo and try to stagger the school times better to alleviate traffic along Carlin Springs. The Glen Carlyn neighbors argue that is impossible-- and to be fair, if you look at a map, some of those streets are dead ends off Carlin Springs so those neighbors really are totally trapped in their streets if Carlin Springs locks up with traffic.
I think Arlington needs to grow a pair and take on VDOT. We're getting screwed with the 66 expansion because they wouldn't fight VDOT then either. The Arlington County state delegation needs to take this up with the Governor's office and get them to put pressure on VDOT for us. |
The point was to look at potential uses of the site. Apparently the county has since decided that it can't afford to do anything with the site over the next ten years except spend $1.5 million to tear down the existing buildings so they don't incur ongoing maintenance expenses. |
If JFAC went away, would anyone care? That has to be the most useless citizen committee in Arlington... so much pomp and circumstance when it was announced, and it doesn't seem to really do anything other than rubber stamp Mark Schwartz's vision. I know so many qualified people who applied to be on JFAC and were rejected. And then the County Board appointed an Arlington socialite with no professional experience as JFAC chair... she is a former AHC board member though and a prolific fundraiser for ACDC candidates, so go figure. |
| So i was looking at the input on engage and saw a great suggestion to convert gunston to a highschool and put a middle school at career center. Has that been suggested or looked at seriously at all? |
Ha! And we thought the Barcroft and Columbia Forest people were have hissy fits now! Wait and see what the demographics at Wakefield look like if that comes to pass! Honestly, they’ve been such bitter jack asses, it makes me support this decision. Not even sure my house would be zoned there. I’m planning to Move anyway. I suggest the rest of you consider your options. |
What's not true? If you really went to every CCWG, you would understand that Monday night was the FIRST night we were told that several programs within the Career center could never be moved, even for phasing purposes. So the day care, the cyber security room, the woodworking room, etc. We had an entire meeting devoted to phasing and they described phasing at Yorktown and Abington, where classes were moved in succession so that different parts of the building could be improved at a time. But now we now that can't be done. So don't tell me that I'm misrepresenting things. And by the way, I have been to EVERY meeting, unlike you. And yes, there was always a discussion about certain FIELDS being offsite. As I said above, we always knew that softball/baseball fields would be offsite. But we were told gymnasium, auditorium, pool could fit on the footprint. Oh, "at least through 2022" does not mean these things NEVER move. In fact, it suggests the opposite: that they could be moved. |
|
So, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but as a resident of the 22204 for over a decade now, I have become a cynic. It has become very clear that they will tell you about all the wonderful things that can be done in order to pass whatever the agenda du jour is, and then do none of those wonderful things. It is what it is. If you were expecting it to be different this time, well, now you know. Don't get fooled again.

I see you are familiar with that Columbia Pike Plan and Form based code. Let me crack the code for those not familiar. The code is: you will get every negative aspect of the plan and none of the proposed perks. |

When will APS just rent an office building in Crystal City or Ballston and turn it into Arlington Science High School? That is all we really can afford.
