I think yields will come down across the board for everyone but the top 5 or so schools. Not enough acceptances to go around and it's the same people who keep getting admitted. Predicting a lot of wait-list activity. No way is what happened this year sustainable for the future without upping the reliance on ED

Couldn't it just be deluge of international and illegal immigrant applicants?

No, I work at JHU and the administration informed us that international applicants are down. This seems to be widespread. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/02/us/international-enrollment-drop.html

DACA is also down according to a friend at UMD.

The cohort of graduating HS seniors applying to college peaked in 2012. I understand children are applying to more colleges but that has to signal that we are at peak crazy right now and that admit rates will soften going forward. Colleges that want to play the admission fee waiver and no supplemental questions have already done so. Gamesmanship won't have an impact like it has in the past. Admit rates will increase across the board in the next 3-5 years.

On College Confidential a lot of psychotic no life tiger parents have kids who got into Harvard Yale Princeton early, then have them apply to every top 15 college regular decision. It's call "shotgunning" so you can brag about your haul of acceptances on social media and snapchat.

This is so ridiculous. Trying to rack up acceptances isn't some special prize - it screws with the system as a whole. At some point I hope the colleges share info with each other about their early acceptances so that other schools just know which apps to set aside.

Even worse, you could tell a lot of them were targeting specific "prestige" scholarships at schools in the 10-20 range with zero intention of ever attending. Special sort of asshole to waste everyone's time at that college and the department offering the award for a fleeting dopamine hit.

Actually not true, overall international applications are down 3%, however they are UP 15% in Computer science and engineering. There is less interest in other fields. And of course the more elite the institution, the more clamour to get in by international students. http://www.browndailyherald.com/2018/03/14/fewer-international-science-engineering-grad-students-u-s/
