I think what OP has in mind is Lancaster, PA. https://nypost.com/2016/09/20/the-new-brooklyn-boogie-on-down-to-buggy-town/ |
Why is anyone bothering to respond? OP has only been on here a couple of times, has not answered any questions or provided additional input. Pointless. |
If your'e looking for a beautiful historic village surrounded by picturesque countryside then I'd suggest Shepherdstown. Yes, it's in West Virginia which the last few election cycles has gone red, but this is a liberal enclave. The best part about the community is that it's exactly that—a community.
You'll find all locally owned, independent stores including a hip coffee shop and restaurants ranging from Thai to vegan. A lot of people don't realize the historical significance the town played either. It hosted the Israeli Syria peace talks during Bill Clinton's last year in office. Most businesses still display "Peace" in the windows of the storefronts. Hope this gives you an idea. |
Poolesville, Barnesville/Bealsville area |
There are liberal rural enclaves throughout NE and a few in the PNW. I don’t know any here, except the Legacy commune in southern VA and I think it’s just them. |
I was just in Poolesville. I saw a lot of bumper stickers and political signage. Not looking real liberal. |
Leesburg, Spotsylvania county VA, olney Md, Berryville Va - all fit the bill |
Shepherdstown WV is liberal and cute-as-a-button. Lots of outdoor recreational activities around there. Antietam is down the road. Hagerstown, MD is not too far and has a large hospital for emergencies. You might want to consider renting instead of buying if you're only going to be there for 2 years.

Hah, reminds me of the retired military couple who moved to NW Minnesota where my parents lived, bought land (maybe a quarter section) with an old house that probably hadn't been lived in for many years, plan was to add on to the original farmhouse. They lived in an RV at first, eventually bought a house in town (few miles away). My dad enjoyed spending time with them but at times it got dicey given that the community was mostly people descended from 1880s homesteaders. The wife eventually got some kind of job (medical records maybe?--in the closest "large" town of enough thousand people to have a hospital). I do recall seeing their property about 10 years in, the shell of the house addition was still there with some long-peeling and blackened plywood. If they are coming for 2 years, why would they want to spend their time (whether DIY or general contractor) fixing/building a house they are going to leave? |
Dickerson has Marc train, and there is a private school in that area
This is in MD, I think it is the next stop after Germantown. |
Not sure if you have considered the economics. Are you going to buy this place and then try to rent it when you go back and forth to other postings. Or are you going to buy it and live there a few years and sell. Either wat seems like a money loss. |
This thread got bumped up, god knows why. But OP is already only just a year away from her next posting abroad. I doubt this ever worked out and they ended up in a rental in Springfield or Burke. |
Early Christmas gift to the byotchesi of DCUM |
great falls? |
Op here! Weird to see this thread. We managed to extend our last posting an extra year so we just got back to USA. We bought a house in Dufief neighborhood of N Potomac Maryland - my husband wasn’t willing to commute from any further out. We love it. Thanks all |
