If you want an adventure, buy an old house and fix it up. Or buy a lot and build a house. Great 2-year project.
Hah, reminds me of the retired military couple who moved to NW Minnesota where my parents lived, bought land (maybe a quarter section) with an old house that probably hadn't been lived in for many years, plan was to add on to the original farmhouse. They lived in an RV at first, eventually bought a house in town (few miles away). My dad enjoyed spending time with them but at times it got dicey given that the community was mostly people descended from 1880s homesteaders. The wife eventually got some kind of job (medical records maybe?--in the closest "large" town of enough thousand people to have a hospital). I do recall seeing their property about 10 years in, the shell of the house addition was still there with some long-peeling and blackened plywood. If they are coming for 2 years, why would they want to spend their time (whether DIY or general contractor) fixing/building a house they are going to leave?
