Georgia Tech (OOS) or UVA (in-state) for Aerospace Engineering? Need to decide by April 30th. TIA

People in Va do not want their kids to explore the world but to stay close and follow their footsteps.

And you would know this how exactly? People in VA are some of the most worldly I've met. That's one of the things that attracted us when we moved here after stints in China and Europe.

I think many people in VA, as in other states have become very conscious of the ridiculously high cost of college and are opting not to saddle their kids with debt, all in the name of getting an education out of state. Increasingly, OOS schools who want smart VA students are realizing that an offering in-state tuition as an enticement.

Worldly? Have you visited anyplace outside of nova and a couple university towns? Hunt, fish, hunt, fish...

And some of the comments I've already heard from other parents of young children. They are doing VA Prepaid Plan because they say that VA schools are the only option for their kids. I've noticed similar comments on DCUM too. I've found it to be a very prevalent attitude here in VA.

Maybe it didn't happen with you and your friends but it happens. Be thankful that you have a good in-state option AND an OOS options too. You have more choices than others.

Also, you are mixing up posts a bit. Someone said you'd be a "fool" to consider anything other than UVA. I am the "lemmings" poster and I never attacked state schools at all. Only the attitude that they are the *only* option. Anyway, give that is not applicable to you I wouldn't sweat it.

Good luck, OP. Sounds like a tough process. When this tiny baby I'm holding grows up I'm sure it will be tough for her too. Not looking forward to that.

Lemmings: no one said that. The response to your stupid post was that only a fool would call students lemmings for focusing on a great instate option. Go back and try to ... Read and comprehend. Nice try to walk it back, though.

Get out of this area and try a new city. You can avoid the lemmings from NoVA who think VA schools are the only option.

Uh, yeah, but when you have a terrific in state option like UVa, as the OP does, only a fool would take such an attitude about "lemmings."

Here were the lemming and fool posts. I can't believe I'm having this "discussion". Is everyone on here from HS?

I'll go back to the BFing and sleeping posts.

And try to let go of the bitterness about "lemmings" from nova, moving forward.

Hard to take you seriously about "worldly" when you apparently struggle with reading comprehension.

I've met more folks from other places here in VA than when I was living in NYC. Please try to keep up. Despite your parochial experiences, VA draws people from all over the world. My kid's public school alone has kids from 50 + countries. Yes, certain parts of Virginia are rural, too, but that's part of its charm.

I am OP - I truly don't understand the few anti-virginia comments on my thread (which seems to have been hijacked). I love VA. Where else can you live in VA, Attend school in another state, and then have an internship position on a technology subcommittee in Congress (the District) all in the same day? I've never seen (as a student) what the negative posters are talking about. My classmates are all excited about their options whether in VA or not but no one considers VA being "lemming" institutitions where students are being forced to attend against their wishes. If anything, it's the opposite. They want into VA schools but can't get in because most of us are applying from No. VA (those that are in-state). Whether I pick Ga Tech or UVA it will be knowing both have great opportunities, lots of international students, diversity, diversity in faculty and get a great education. Thanks for your assistance.

UVA is not well regarded outside of Virginia but GT is well regarded for engineering/tech.

Definitely, GT.

Sure there is. Georgia tech is a world class engineering school. UVA is a nice school, but in that field not nearly the same caliber. If the money matters, consider it. If you have the money, choose Georgia tech.

Totally. UVA has only been a top 3 public school for a decade (maybe longer).

Not true, both UVA and Ga Tech are considered "Most Selective" by U.S. News & World Report.

Just curious, OP, what is your final choice?

I think down the road my son will be choosing between UMDCP and Georgia Tech.
His dream is also Aerospace Engineering. Given that I am GaTech graduate and College Park is 10th in Aerospace and in state for us, I bet we will be torn similarly like you are.
However, I am afraid College Park will win, since we will have 3 kids in college at the same time...
