| NW WOTP ES schools will be overcrowded even if you completely redraw the boundaries and kick out OOB. |
I agree about the school bus, and think that it would probably not be that difficult to coordinate, though still possibly beyond the ability of DCPS. However, even if you have a bus full of kids in that motel who are going to school, they are not all going to the same school. They cannot be required to go to the same school, either. McKinney-Vento school provisions were in direct response to policies where children living in shelters were educated in special schools, usually associated with the shelter. These schools were not good - teachers not qualified to teach, mixed age classrooms by necessity because not enough kids for proper "grade levels", poor facilities, etc. It is better for children experiencing homelessness to be in school with other children, and it is better for children to have educational stability. This is why McKinney-Vento requires that children be allowed to attend their previous school or the school zoned for their temporary living situation. |

See minute 50, where Mary Cheh questions Kaya Henderson about the shelter's affect on Stoddert's capacity. Henderson responds that DCPS just learned about the shelter, too. |
I can't stand the way Kaya keeps saying crap like "you know..." and "Right?" Damn girl, take a speaking class. |
Well ... Grosso apparently is familiar "with the way [she] roll[s]." Shrug. |
|
Perhaps she learned how to say it in Spanish, on her junket to Cuba. The bottom line is that Kaya, just like her gal pal Bowser, is not exactly the sharpest pencil in the drawer. |
So under what logic should DCPS deliberately take a bad situation and make it worse?! |
The only real solution is a new NW elementary school. |
don't hold your breath... |
Not true at all.If boundaries shifted South to Hearst and Eaton, there would be plenty of IB space. The problem would be the push back from those zoned out of J,L,M and also from EOTP people who lose the OOB spots. Was definitely discussed at the endless DME boundary review meetings but no one had the good sense or strength to use some logic and make it happen. |
This wouldn't help Key and Stoddert, also very overcrowded. |
Totally false. You don't know what you are talking about. Unless you want to put kindergarten kids in 5th grade or something? |
How many OOBs are still at Stoddert? No one is willing to administer the tough medicine of aggressively managing out the OOB population through attrition. |
