| I just passed by Fillmore and saw the kids being let off by "Capitol Entertainment" tourist buses. What a bunch of fiscal mis-managers at DCPS are wasting our education dollars. Then they use these bloated contracts to support their argument to kill Fillmore. Somebody competent needs to step in to get actual market numbers to pay for Fillmore. |

Why can't Marie Reed take advantage of arts less than a mile away at newly renovated and fully staffed HD Cooke? Has anyone asked Marie Reed families if they would prefer children getting quality arts education with less time on a bus? What about Ross families? Garrison and SWWFS have full time arts staff and are half the distance to Fillmore. Why would anyone prefer that their young child spend so much time travelling? |
Fillmore isn't really that much further than the other options, and getting to a different school would still require a hired bus. Plus, dumping the responsibility of arts education on other schools wouldn't be easy. No one should expect that to happen in August... |
Kids could easily walk from Reed to HD Cooke. It's a 5 minute walk for an adult, so no more than 15 mins for kids. |
Please be sure to understand that the schools have no say in the buses that pick up the students and deliver them to Fillmore. It's all the central office. We've questioned why "coaches" are sent rather than yellow school buses again and again. Someone's palm is getting greased on that deal and I wish a good investigative reporter would look into it. I'm convinced that the bus deal has a bit to do with why central office is desperate to close Fillmore. Not just for the cost savings and the money they'd recoup but I suspect they don't want anyone looking too closely at that cushy busing contract. |
Isn't Marie Reed supposed to be under construction next year? |
Yep. Would have to be 2017-18 |
Are they planning an arts room after renovations? |

In D.C., the contractors know to "play and get paid" while DCPS told the Fillmore community that they must "pay to play." I suppose if Fillmore could give campaign contributions to Bowser and friends they might get more respect. |
Fillmore East according to Fillmore itself [url]https://friendsoffillmore.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/2012-april-newsletter.pdf [url] 2013 Fillmore East and West had 3,000 kids in 11 schools. 2015 Fillmore West has 1,600 kids in 5 schools. Setting aside the historical reputation of Fillmore for a moment, today 3 of the 5 schools, Key, Ross and Reed, are 2 miles from Fillmore. Yet each is only yet only 1 mile from a DCPS schools with full-time arts educators. Mann, Garrison, and HD Cooke, respectively. Hyde-Addison is roughly equidistant between Fillmore and SWWFS. Purely from a logistics standpoint, how is Fillmore justifiable as a stand-alone resource for 45 minute classes? Please don't point out the 40 year history. We get it. |
| Just curious, all you posters who say the affected schools should share the art resources in the neighboring schools.....who do you expect to teach these other students? Certainly not the in-house art teacher who I can assure you has his/ her hands full with their current student body. Get real. |
| The arts resources at Hearst are amazing, I never realized how thankful we should be. Dedicated space and wonderful teachers. I hope these schools find a solution or are able to have continued access to Fillmore! |
