once classes are stabilized it starts coming on. my 7th grader (who was there last year) has had about 1 hour of homework per night plus reading, and homework over the weekend thus far this year.

I don't know about this--my DD was placed in a lower math class, is totally disappointed at how easy it is, says teacher is always shocked at how far ahead she is, yet there's been no word about moving up.

Yes, dear, we're sure your precious snowflake is gifted. And DCUM is such a good place to vent your spleen and do something about this instead of talking to the school

What? I didn't say she is gifted. In fact, she is not--she is just in a math class that's too easy for her. You are an asshole.

2-3 classes in 6th grade. 3 seems to be when a specials teacher is fluent in their language (e.g. the PE teacher conducts class in Mandarin for the children who came from YY; drama is in Spanish for the kids who came from a spanish immersion feeder.)

FWIW my DC says PE is conducted in English since kids from all feeder schools take it together.

Your DC is wrong. The upper level Chinese kids take PE in Chinese. Spanish does theater in Spanish and French does drama/art in French.

Pretty sure my DC is right--this is 6th grade.

I don't think you read the thread very carefully. Other people made comments about kids being moved around. I added my own. How is that stirring shit? FWIW my daughter loves DCI as do all of her friends. The parents I know are pleased. People will run into problems, and voice them, as is true of any school. What are you afraid of?
Anonymous
Yes, dear, but they voice them to the school, not DCUM. And they also don't call people "assholes".

NP here. I'm a very strong DCI supporter. I think the pp's question was absolutely fine, and she got good advice. Also, I don't know what is going on in your life right now, but you sound a bit troubled right now.
Anonymous
as do you, dear.

Why on earth wouldn't they do this over the summer? Seems nearly a month of school has been lost.

Because they don't know who is coming for sure, don't have staff to administer assessments over the summer (it's not a year-around school), and learning is not lost. It also gives teachers a chance to get to know kids and prevent improper recommendations from feeders or kids who don't test well but can actually do the work. God, you're high test!

So glad I opted my kid out of DCI. My kid left his DCI charter feeder in the fifth grade when Latin's acceptance email arrived. Latin did a math assessment of all incoming students for placement. I did not realize how little my kid did not know, as DC received high marks from his former school.

Unraveling.

Yes. Whole damn thread!!!

1) My DC and the rest of the kids from YY get PE in Chinese.

2) My DC got some levels moved because the teacher recommendations did not match his performance on the assessments and in class. I was told that they gave all the kids assessments in math and moved them up if they scored above a certain level.

Well, my 6th grader gets PE in English. On further inquiry, it appears there are only 2 Yu Ying kids in that PE class. Weird!

Maybe it was a scheduling thing that put those two kids in English PE.

Perhaps they were in the non-immersion academic track while attending Yy.
