Rolling Stone Article - Sexual Assault at UVA

This is going to take a culture change at UVA. It could take a decade.

As a former Greek on a different campus in a different part of the country, I can attest that while there was partying, there was NEVER anything like this. The Greeks on my campus did serve a purpose.

However, I do understand the value that on the UVa campus, things are way out of control.

After the horrific lacrosse murder, the abduction murders (Charlottesville has a rediculously high violent crime rate) , and now this ingrained culture of almost mentally retarded sexual lord of the flies bullying.... Wtf is the deal?

George Huguely and now the Phi Psis - painting a scary picture of UVa life. And wtf - UVa putting forth a former Phi Psi member as the "independent investigator." Unreal. The next choice needs to be more carefully considered.

How is it that Frats can get away with giving away alcohol? If parents had a party and gave alcohol to HS kids, they can be held criminally responsible. Do cops in C'ville (and all college campuses) look the other way? How can colleges dump the frats?? or at least take the booze away?

I agree one on one date/acquaintance rapes are everywhere. I went to Duke and got myself in a situation with a date where we went back to his dorm, guy must have hoped this would happen because his roommate wasn't there, I had a crush on him and was willing to make out but not sex. When he got insistent after I said no, I kneed him in the groin and was able to leave. I am sure young women find themselves overpowered in these situations all the time. It's terrible, my experience led me to be a rape crisis counselor in college so for 3 years i was on call when someone called the hotline or came to the police station or ER. In the early 2000s, this wasn't so much a frat thing but just a male thing. I saw way more athletes and RA/TAs (people in a perceive position of power), than frats. And not once did I ever get a gang rape.

The gang rape aspect is what scares the shit out of me. That a group of men would conspire and premeditate to inflict physical and sexual violence on a person, that there was zero concern for consequences. I see no difference between this and what happened to Hannah Graham. Abduction with intent to defile.

I know of a gang rape of a 15 year old girl. She knows better than to report it -- so those boys got away with it. A story repeated many times. It does not help that colleagues/ students then judge the girl.

I went to a Virginia college -- 3 out of 4 of my friends were raped. They turned to another student (me) for counseling. As a college student myself I was not much help to them.

Clearly there is an issue with a protect rapists culture where even considering not reporting is the best option.

Had she reported it, I have no doubt the repercussions would have awful. But there would have been evidence. And the repercussions were awful, anyway.

In addition to teaching men not to rape, we need to change this perception that women should not report it.

All that would have happened is that she would be "raped" again by the system but in a different way.

Thats twice now that someone posted, maybe two someones, using the R word. It is extremely insulting to people with developmental or intellectual disabilities when you use it as an insult like this.

Years down the road, will any of these 7 rapists even have any sense of guilt or acknowledgement that they are in fact rapists. Imagine having that fact about you: I am a rapist. Will any of them make amends in some way?

It's like saying not eating vegetables will retard your growth. Not used in the manner you are referring . There is a difference.

I think with Longo on the case, they will be found, they will be tried, they will be found guilty and they will serve time. Some other websites are already outing possible suspects by posting links to people based on information given out in the Rolling Stone article.
