K orientation was a big let down.

PTA is also partially responsible for K orientation. Lets not put all the blame on the teachers.

It's just called the wrong thing. Call it registration and I would expect nothing more than signing papers. Make clear I could drop the papers off any time and I'm even happier.

But call it orientation, send home the kindergarteners and make people schedule appointments right in the middle of the work day - yeah, I would expect more than handing in forms and watching a video.

OK, so join the PTA and change kindergarten orientation so that it meets your expectations.

+10000 The PTA doesn't run Kindergarten Orientation. Its up to the principal how it is run and the PTAs may participate and help out. Schools that do nothing beyond signing papers and watching a video are either idiots or intentionally being deceptive hoping that more people will come by with forms if they "think" its an orientation.

It is just laziness from a lazy school district. Prepared to be let down over and over again

Here is something I consider lazy: complaining about a problem, but refusing to do anything to try to solve it.

Exactly. I told my neighbors to go to the open house if they wanted to see the school, ask questions, etc.
the orientation isn't really an orientation. For us it was the kids being grouped and moved from station to station, run by K teachers, to be assessed for things like writing your name , counting. Parents were shepherded to another room for paperwork.
