K orientation was a big let down.

No it is called Kindergarten Orientation. No one told me I was just there to register my child. I could do that on a day off from my job or in the morning before I leave. I shouldn't have to take a day off of work and bring my child in all excited for "orientation" to be in there for 20min and not learn a thing about the school.

Is it really that big of a deal? Really ?
Your kid is going into kindergarten, relax!

I think it is a big deal. I asked for a school tour because I was debating whether I should keep ds in yah private k and I was told no. I went to the registration event and no one presented any information whatsoever.

I understand how op feels.

Do you work? It was a huge deal for me to take the day off

To ask people to take off work not only for incoming students but for the current K students just to hand in forms? Ridiculous.

Yes, I do work.
1) I just did not expect to make a school decision at orientation, hmmm common sense dictates I would have made that choice a little sooner

2) no I did not have overwhelming feelings of disappointment because of the nature if orientation

3) no I do not think the nature of the orientation means the scho is terrible

4) no I don't think my snowflake is going to need therapy because orientation was somehow disappointing for my kid

5) all the info you are looking for happens on back to school night

6) get a grip

I also think it's a big deal, you take off from work, current kindergartner's don't go to school that day either. So for all this... hand in paperwork and watch a video?

That's unacceptable, as is attacking the original poster when she/he pointed out valid criticisms.

A little late for what ?
To decide if you want to go to that school?
Right before school starts is a little to decide that don't you think?
I understand being a little disappointed, but in the long run, no. This is not a big deal.
It just is not, you are talking about kindergarten orientation ... Come on!!!

Not OP but orientation is supposed to orient a child and parent to a school in advance. Tours, meeting teachers, staff, seeing classrooms. If preschools can do it, so can Kindergarten. If they are having all the current kids not come to school for 1-2 days, there should be something. Anyone can hand in forms. Hearing K teachers say at a table and talked to each other and not the students or parents speaks volumes if you ask me. I would be ticked off too. A little effort on initial impressions can go along way. I truly wish every school cost money instead of free state-wide funding via taxes and your child could decide where to go. Make these schools accountable. Hearing such huge discrepancies in these K orientations is pretty sad when you don't have an option.

Then email the principal and express your concern. Live and learn I guess. It's public school so they don't have to put on a show for you. They don't care if your child goes to their school or not. Now, if this was an expensive private school, yeah, I would be pissed off. But it isn't.

Well we just differ.
If it was better set up.. Nice... I can get with that
It is not, I can deal with it
I just think. Meh...that was UNDERWHELMING..
My is going to be in school for a looong time... Kinder orientation is a blip on th screen.
Like I said, found out everything I needed to know at Back to School Night.
Honestly, orientation is not designed for folks who cannot decide if that is where their kid can go.
It is for the parents who have already made that decision.

If every school cost money, our educational system would be even more inequitable than it is.
Privatizing every school is not the answer unless the question is how do we FURTHER ENCOURAGE THE CREATION OF AN UNDERCLASS.

Your comment just shows how sad and low the expectations are. EVERY school should welcome and orient everyone. Another reason private and parochial schools are so popular.
