Rich DC lacrosse parents let kids repeat grades

Anonymous
I never said they didn't, PP. (Can you read?) I have friends whose kids go there/went there and they pay tuition (not athletes...one had an academic scholarship). But I also am familiar with their football program. Not all of the kids are on scholarship...but many are...and who cares? Good for them! Prep and all other privates with strong athletic programs recruit and offer scholarships. So what? Honestly, some of the Jewish kids on the football team might be on scholarship as well. The kids earned the scholarship, and they should be proud of that (not ashamed). It means they are better athletes than their non-scholarship peers.

Who wants a Wall St job ?

So they'll get a job at a second, third tier firm. You don't get a job at Goldman just playing lax.

What you actually said was ...

I was on campus for my son's game in the fall, and there were tons of African American boys from prep working out, etc. Not legacies....no chance in hell. These kids are recruited and given scholarships so teams will win.

Just admit it was a crass statement and move on. BTW... AA is not the correct term unless you personally know the child (they are on you own son's football team so you should know them, but somehow I doubt you do). They may be Nigerian or Dominican or from England, so black is the term, not AA. Just like you don't call all Asian kids Chinese, unless of course they are Chinese. Just stick with Black.

We probably know each other, I am just saying you need to be a little more 2014 than 1985.

Anyway way off topic since Prep since this is about lacrosse.

EXACTLY and the richies are dumb enough to go for it.

Hilarious. You do realize that rich people are generally smarter than the average Joe right? That is why they are rich and Joe isn't. The rich don't spend their money on stupid things, that is why they are rich. You are poor because you don't get that. Wow. Not a rocket scientist are you?

A no, we have not held either of our lacrosse playing kids back and have no plans to do so and, yes, they are both in private school in DC.

That sure hasn't been my experience.

I've met lots of people who were born on third base and believe they hit a triple, though.

Until there is a rule against holding your kid back or having him repeat a grade, this isn't cheating. That is a fact. It is a family making a decision, presumably with the child's best interest in mind. Come on you can't have it both ways. Society, politicians, and educators all beat into our heads that the best path to prosperity is a high-level education. As a result, most parents want their kids to get into the best academic institution they can get into. And most children want to do the same. That is why so many families, including many of you who criticize this practice, spend hundreds if not thousands to get tutoring for the SAT and other standardized test. And college application consultants. Poor families cannot do this. Are you cheating? No, you're doing what you can do within the rules to get the best outcome for your child. Many of the colleges with strong lacrosse programs are excellent academic institutions. University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Duke, Johns Hopkins. I see nothing wrong with doing whatever you can, within the rules, to get your child into one of these schools.

What's wrong with having your kid repeat a grade later on if it helps them remain competitive with all the boys who were redshirted for K? They are the same age in HS.

Nobody said it was cheating. It's not cheating until the kids lie about their birthday so they can play 8th grade CYO or they just play unrosters.

Nobody said it was wrong, silly... A little pathetic maybe but there was no mention of it being wrong. It's a way to play the system.

It is a little sad when these boys don't make varsity junior year "after all the hard work" ... Though some get on the roster for their applications but don't get playing time, there are close to 40 kids on a team and about 18 play, so they are even "let" onto the team even though they aren't that good, but it goes on the application.

To 18:33 - plenty of parents "play the system" by red shirting for Kindergarten. That's my point...there's really no difference. There's an 8 year old in my kid's class...he's super smart and doesn't have any issues that would have warranted starting K late (I know because I've known the kid since pre-K 2 through school). But Dad is a real jock. See?

Sorry: should have said there's an eight year old in my kids first grade class.
