I polled my Russian grandparents and their friends (age 70+). Harvard is THE school for them

UVA is ranked 147th in the world. Does that answer the question?

UVA isn't really prestigious either. The Shanghai is just a "who gets research money" ranking, anyways. UMD beats UVA because Virginia spreads their research around more, while Maryland does all of its academic research at UMD CP, and cares more about research in general. There are buildings at UMD where undergrads never enter because it's just for researchers, UVA has nothing like that. The rankings don't account for average class sizes, outcomes, quality of teaching, or GPA/rank/standardized test scores of the entering class, all of which are arguably superior at UVA.

I think UMD College Park spreads their research as well, especially to UM at Baltimore where almost all of the professional schools are located such as medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, nursing school, public health school, law school etc. It is often said that combining UM college park with UM at Baltimore will place them as the number 1 in terms of research money ahead of Harvard and other top schools.

Looking at the data, you're right, but that doesn't change the fact that Maryland just spends more on research overall than Virginia. It says nothing about the prestige (or quality from the perspective of an undergraduate) of the schools.

As a foreigner I have never even heard of some of the smaller liberal arts colleges that some Americans find prestigious. I would never spend any money to send my child there. Colleges that come to mind are Elon, for example.

Depends on the foreigner, of course. Families that come from high-level diplomatic backgrounds or academic backgrounds (university professors) have heard of and send their children to top liberal arts colleges in the US. Well-to-do, but not international, families will send their children to better known Ivies and the like.

Wharton - at the undergrad or MBA level. Over in Asia, people don't seem to mention Penn UNLESS the graduate is from Wharton.

It's a joke to international community.

These are schools with strong engineering and science programs, so it can be very field-specific.

University of Michigan and Georgia Institute of Technology for engineering and Aerospace are far better (MIT still rules)

We are professors and we have many professor friends who came from foreign countries, but we all agree that it not a good idea to send kids to the liberal arts colleges. These collegs' survival depends on the us news college rankings.

As an US academic, I put Elon in the same category.

So, not the most prestigious, but certainly in the top 10% (since there are 500 on the list)
