Why no Uniforms in MCPS ?

1. an expensive private school
2. a Catholic private school
3. a poor urban public school district

OP, how would wearing uniforms instill discipline? Besides discipline in doing laundry, for the parent who is responsible for the laundry...

Nothing shows ignorance like this one right here!

Kids would focus more on studies and other things than remarking/keeping up with latest fashion. Reduce Bullying for kids who do not follow the latest and greatest trends.
It would have everyone at same level in terms of clothing - rich/poor/middle

In my opinion uniforms don't do anything like that

Well every study in the world shows otherwise, but you keep your opinion Joan!

My sons last school in another state had uniforms. Kids definitely compared name brand uniforms. This whole puts everyone in the same class is not true. I also wore uniforms and the kids then used the shirts lands end uniforms and shoes/backpacks as tells. It’s just another industry to sell.

Have you considered that studies are flawed/can be paid/lobbied?

I went to school in the UK and the uniform policies are ridiculous. I had a cousin who was suspended when he was the equivalent of a high school senior, at a key time for university entrance (A levels) because he wasn’t wearing the right shoes!! Suspended! And disciplined for not wearing the right color socks. Another cousin, who is now a single parent is struggling to not only buy all the right parts for the uniform (blazer, shirt, tie, pants, shoes etc) but also having to buy the expensive PE uniform! This is at a public school and there is no justification for these policies. Just the PE kit was around $200 and had to be purchased from a specific supplier and i know because I bought it for her!

MCPS can barely get people to wear masks in a deadly pandemic let alone uniforms.

Most of these studies are about opinions of uniforms or studies where uniform wearing is universal in public education. It's really difficult to actually isolate out uniforms as the determining factor of behavior change.

An effective study would be to take half the school and require them to wear uniforms and the other half to not and study discipline issues after a year.

I studied in India and we had school uniforms - private or public school.
Now that my daugter started K, I'm wondering whats the reason behind not having uniforms in MCPS schools ?
It would instill so much discipline and equality. Save me some money too ;o).

Please educate me whats so good about not having uniforms ...

I WISH they'd do uniforms! It'd make our lives so much easier and save so much time in the mornings....

We'd never hear the end of the complaining.

I think it's up to the parents and staff to help stop bullying and teasing. Sure they won't bully about clothes but they still would bully about other things.

There are used uniform sales and even giveaways.

We have bins full of uniforms for kids who can’t afford them. Same with winter coats, etc.

Why resurrect a 9-year-old zombie thread?

People in MCPS don't want uniforms because uniforms in public schools in the US are associated with poverty.
