Getting ready for school isn’t a difficulty for most. |
Our school has an exchange where you can swap / give away things that no longer fit or are needed. |
| I do think sensory issues might exist for some kids. My eldest was so particular about every fabric, item of clothing, fit, etc. |
Why do girls have to wear shorts under their skirt? I don’t wear shorts under my skirts. |
| Np. I grew up in Asia, another Commonwealth country and wore uniform (pinafore and a white blouse) in primary and secondary schools. Hated it. I always wondered why we aren’t allowed to wear pants. As far as equality goes, I always knew who were the poorer kids despite the uniforms. One way to tell is when you see someone whose white blouse is not so white or if we the blue pinafore has become faded. Those were clearly hand me downs. We weren’t allowed to wear just regular shoes and we had to wear standard white sneakers. Again, you can always tell who were the poorer kids. The system is not perfect. |

Kids don't want uniforms and I don't think there is any evidence that they are helpful. Kids are too cold in winter and too hot in summer. Uniforms are itchy polyester and usually look awful which is not great for self esteem. Some kids do not have a body type that will look good in those one size fits all uniforms. Try finding a jumper for a 5th grade girl who has developed breasts.
My child went to Catholic School for grades 2-5. Uniforms were not that simple. Limited options meant that super skinny kids like mine always had trouble getting uniforms to fit. Don't get me started on the shoes - he never once had a pair that felt right and several times I had to buy a second or third pair because the uniform shoes we bought seemed ok but gave him blisters or were too narrow for wide feet. Kids who go into middle school often wear a different uniform but what if your child is the size of a 3rd grader in 6th grade and no options fit? Uniform companies don't even make the item in a range of sizes so the kid looks ridiculous in a shirt three sizzes too big for him. It's more laundry stress and checking to make sure it's ironed every night wasn't fun. Older kids modify the uniforms as much as they can get away with as a desperate attempt to have some say in what they wear. Why not let them express themselves? When schools are flexible and allow pants to be just navy blue trousers for example, parents go and buy Ralph Lauren or more expensive brands so that won't level the playing field at all. Kids know who has money and who doesn't. Uniforms don't change that. It's just such a ridiculous concept in my opinion. OP - this isn't India so comparing everything to how it works in India is going to cause a lot of frustration for you. |
So if there are so many modifications, what's the point of the uniform in the first place? |
Needs to be gender-neutral |

I worked at a school with uniforms and I hated that it became one more thing to discipline students. Especially since many students were low income and did not have washers and dryers in their own home so I don't think it was really fair to punish them for not having clean uniforms to wear for school.
I don't think uniforms really do anything for student behavior either. |
In my opinion uniforms don't do anything like that |
Why not create a uniform for your kid and stop putting this into school |
A great thing about Merica is you can wear a uniform if you want to... |
+1 I'm the same way. Just get different shades of a top they like, different shades of bottoms they like. Doesn't have to be complicated. |
| kids in privates with uniform still have bullying. And they are expensive. Also, what about shoes? My kid keeps commenting about this and that kid has air jordan and expensive basketball shoes etc etc. |
You probably don’t climb on the monkey bars at recess, either. |
