Teachers- How much do you get paid?

LMAO! I'm a lawyer; my best friend is a teacher (H.S. public). I've put in far more time, money, blood, sweat and tears to get to where I am and to make the money I make. There's no comparison between taking some bullshit masters classes in education and the hazing and stress of law school, passing the bar, and being trained as a lawyer.

You have no idea what it takes to become a teacher now, do you? It took me 7 years of school (undergrad then grad) and 8 standardized exams. Three internships. Three 90+ page papers on said internships. And I'm not sure what your friend's job is like, but teaching is stressful.

ITA. I'm a teacher too, and I love my job. But she really doesn't know what she's talking about, does she? A shit storm of grad school, internships, student teaching, Praxis, and a mound of student debt are what it took to get me here. And she can go the bathroom any time she pleases.

Yeah, and way to respect your best friend. Yeesh. How about the everyday "hazing and stress" of being a high school teacher?

I was a lawyer before going back to get my M.Ed. Teaching is way harder than being a lawyer. Yeah, law school was tough and the bar exam sucked but day to day, being a lawyer was cake walk compared to teaching.

I've been both as well. I think the difference is that there is no break when you are teaching. It sounds strange to most, but it really is true that it's hard to fit in a bathroom visit. The total number of hours spent at work may be fewer every day (I'm there from 7:15 until 3:15) but that's the equivalent of 8 billable hours every day. I also spend at least two hours on paperwork after getting home. I'm not complaining, however. I felt like I was dying while working at a law firm. I love, love, love working with kids.

My friend freely admits that her masters classes are b.s. and that at this point (almost 20 years in?) she's on autopilot and doesn't have to do ton of prep work.

Oh, and btw, when you litigate and are in court or taking a deposition, you also can't go to the bathroom whenever you want.

In any event, I'm not being arrogant, I was just responding to the idiot who expects to be "showered with money" for being a teacher.

would you please just shut up PP. Sheesh!, 'litigate, in court and taking depositions' is NOT your daily life. I'm a lawyer, big law partner, yada yada. Been there, got the t-shirt and it sickens me when people like you hold the legal profession in such arrogant esteem. Please spare me the bs, you can come here and try to flaunt your status in the faces of non-lawyers but remember that some of us are your peers and we are all in on the joke.

I suppose you think your shitty job is somehow better than that of a teacher? that you somehow deserve to be showered with money because you went to law school? The same teachers without whom you wouldn't have that law degree to brag about? I feel sorry for you.

You get an annual salary that includes those weeks off. Your compensation is annual -- so that time isn't unpaid.

Come on.

Hey idiot - my salary is based on me being a 10 month employee. There are 2 classifications in MCPS - 10 month (teachers) and 12 month (admin). The summer is UNPAID. Which is why I am free to find another low paying job at a local camp.

then you can't have it both ways. If you say it's unpaid - than your "annual" salary is higher than what you're quoting (if you make $50k, your annual salary is $60k with 2 months off UNPAID) If you consider it paid - than you're actual salary is $50k.

the best way to compare salaries is to calculate your gross MONTHLY salary - so, teachers working 10 months making $50k would be $5000 monthly. I make about $90k a year with 2 weeks paid vacation, so my monthly salary is $7,500. THAT'S the fairest comparison.

SO teachers - what do you make monthly? if you are in a jurisdiction where you work 9 months - divide your "annual" salary by 9 if you're in a jurisdiction where you work 10 months, then divide by 10.

I make $6500/month as a teacher - paid over 10 months. I set aside extra each month so I can pay myself in July and August. I do not work over the summer - I am lucky to have a husband who makes significantly more than I do, so I can take that time off.

You are such a moron that you can't even litigate your way out of DCUM!

And as far as your "friend" is concerned (not really a friend if you're slamming her on a forum), if she's on autopilot, then she's been teaching the same thing for WAY too long. At that point, when you've lost creativity, you need to leave the profession, as teaching should be dynamic.

just sayin'

I don't think anyone said "showered with money." The phrase used was "show me the money" in exchange for "perks."

Big law lawyers rank up there with Wall Street for both most overpaid and most arrogantly overrated.

Some of the so called teachers here sound so bitter. You'd wonder why they even do it? Like the one (ones) that are ragging on the lawyer.

Arrogant Lawyer wasn't kind to teachers. FWIW, I can list four lawyers who switched to teachings whom I'd never categorized as arrogant - Big Law, that is.

Arrogant Lawyer has issues; the teachers don't.

You sound just as bitter, PP.
