And that is generally true in the world of standardized testing. |
Walls is also a test-in school, however bad a school it is. |
Disagree - I came from a poor family and scored high on the SAT - and I have know of a lot of other folks who likewise did well on SAT despite coming from lower-income families. |
While that maybe true. There is no way in hell higher SES parents would send their kid to a high school with this kind of SAT scores. Thus the exodus of whites, Asians, AA and everyone else who care about education leaving DCPS before high school, Ok, after K or third, or fifth grade. |
That's funny. My HHI is over $500K and my son attends Banneker as do other HHI families. |
There are ALWAYS people who buck the curve. That does not mean the problem does not persist. That's stupid. My dad has a 6th grade education and I am a lawyer. I know alot of people like me. That said, I also know that I am anomoly. My brother did not finish high school and my sister is a secretary. |

^ Bucking the curve runs both ways here - kids who score low but achieve at first-rate colleges and in professional jobs, and kids who score high despite being low-SES.
As long as Banneker's student body remains nearly 100% black, average SAT scores won't nudge up much. Do the Banneker parents care? Apparently not. The connection between kids having a good many upper-middle-class peers (read mostly white in DC) and broad enough horizons to make a smooth transition to college and life beyond is lost on them. The best and brightest low-SES AA kids pay for adult myopia yet again. Mediocre SAT scores, mediocre academics. The school's lovely social environment and application admissions can't change that. |
I don't understand your premise given that Banneker kids are going to great colleges and are successful there. I believe Banneker students receive more scholarship money than any other high school in DC. I am a highly educated parent. I feel like Banneker is the best kept secret. Iactually don't care if white parents ever send their kids there. More for us. FYI, there are white, Latino and Asian kids there. |
So you have the means to send your kid to Sidwell, Exeter, live inbounds to TJ etc. but don't choose to or maybe your kid isn't smart enough... so you obviously value other things besides education and the quality of your kid's high school. Different certainly but not the kind of thing the people I know find "funny." |
Are you serious? You obviously know NOTHING about Banneker. You are clearly talking out of your ass. My kids is getting a great education at Banneker. If that was not the case, he would not be there. I also believe that he will have a much better chance of getting into MIT from there. Believe it or not, they've sent quite a few kids there. Why are you basing the education there solely on SAT scores? Is that all you care about? I don't think Sidwell is a fit for my kid. Nor is Exeter, which we seriuosly considered for your information. I truly like the mental and academic support that we receive from Banneker. We may make a different decision for our other son, but for this one, this is the right decision. Have you EVER met a Banneker graduate. The reason we became interested is because I used to work for the State Superintendent of Education and knew several aspects about what the school offered. The more Banneker graduates I met, the more I was completely intrigued. I've met kids attending UPenn, Harvard, MIT and Morehouse who have so many GREAT things to say about Banneker. I did my research and looked a little further than SAT scores. There is more to school than SAT scores. And FYI, my kid is really smart. I love this anonymous board. I'd be really interested in why you think you are so perfect and smart. |
I see this a lot, and I'm interested in it. Does Bannaker publish a list of where the 2011 class went to college? |
I am going to ask for the list. I've spoken to the principal about the students, but have not asked for the list. If I can get one, believe me, I will post it. |
I've given talks about my job to classes of upperclassmen/women at Banneker for several years running. Every face was AA. So where are these white, Latino and Asian kids? How many are there? Surely not more than 1% of the student body each, or maybe even collectively. There's something wrong with the reverse apartheid arrangement, something very wrong indeed. |

My son talks about the white kids. He's friends with them. If I guessed, I would say the school is about 10 percent latino, 5 percent asian and 2 percent white. Sorry I haven't counted them. If I had known it was so important to you, I would sat there for 5 hours and did the count. Why is is reverse apartheid? No one excludes anyone and I know my son enjoys seeing other faces. We can't force parents to choose Banneker. My son is in 9th grade. I don't know what the upperclassman looked like in years past. |
