Ivies vs State schools

Not missing anything. Do well in premed classes and have good experiences wherever you are. Med school admissions is a numbers game, in addition to shadowing, research, clinical experience, volunteering.

As far as employers v . employees, you've probably noticed that a lot of docs are resigned to being employees and not running their own practices as much. However, if your kid is interested in the business side, throw in some accounting and business classes, schedule permitting.

So the Ivies probably have a significantly higher medical school acceptance rate than UVA, but it is difficult to compare because schools don't always provide good information.

Ivies and top privates in general have far higher acceptance rates. It is likely that a more uniform population leads to fewer marginal candidates along with greater confidence in the level of training. Add on often superior counseling and support structures and you start to understand why the rates of success are so high. Williams states that a graduate with a 3.3 Science GPA and a 510 MCAT has an 80% chance of acceptance to an MD program. Probably not the level of program that they originally aspired too but only a small number of schools can boast of that level of success.
