When is the immersion lottery posted?

Wow. It sounds like nearly an entire class worth of initial invites were declined, if they got to that number that quickly? I guess maybe a couple people had numbers removed after accepting an offer or something, but wow, 23 right out the gate for one of the (historically) most popular programs. Does this seem totally random or maybe indicative that people are nervous to move to SCES after all the relocation discussion this past year?

Yup, that's my guess. It's very likely that SSIMS will close and SCES will either close or relocate in 2029 (high chance of closure IMO, it would be nuts for MCPS to pay to rebuild both Sligo Creek and Highland View so one or the other of them is probably closing), when next year's kindergarteners are starting 3rd grade. That probably gives a lot of parents pause.

I also wouldn't be surprised if acceptances to immersion programs are down across the board given the regional program changes at the HS level this past year, with MS program changes upcoming at some point-- they haven't announced any changes to elementary school programs yet but I would think changes to ES programs sometime over a kindergartner's 6 years in elementary school is extremely likely. Could mean that immersion programs will move from one school to another or be shut down entirely. Even if current kids are grandfathered, that's a lot of potential disruption to sign up for if you're not deeply committed to immersion.

Anyone know how fast the lists are moving elsewhere?

It’s really too bad if so. Our second kid is about to finish there and they are both quite fluent n French. I don’t see how they would have become bilingual in any other way.

I don’t think the program itself will be cut but agree it might not land in the same spot. Wasn’t Spanish at Page a relocation from Rolling Terrace? Changes like that are pretty big for commutes.

Curious about any waitlist updates! How fast is everything moving?

That's a lot of "ifs" to decline a spot for. Not saying it isn't true that these factors are driving decisions, but to me there's still very little downside to enrolling if you have a spot since you know your kids has several years of immersion before any changes are actually implemented. Even the most aggressive timeline for closure/rebuilding is 3 years out, and realistically seems likely anything would take longer than that. And the nature of those changes is still completely unknown (e.g. sure they might close SCES but could easily move the french program with it to a new school within the same district, or shift the french program to highland view which is extremely close by...lots of scenarios here that are totally fine).

I agree with you. Seeing that the waitlist is moving faster this year though, I can only hope it means that more people who really want immersion will get it.
