What do I pay? Depends, but try to keep it under $300, but realize in a lot of places this isn’t possible.
I’m over staying at luxury properties. Room costs more and everything from coffee, bottled water and breakfast is marked up by 500%. For better or worse, we are loyal to Hilton. I’ve stayed in very nice Conrad’s and Waldorf Astorias, but Hampton and Homewood Suites is usually fine for us. Where I draw the line on prices is places like Ocean City, MD. There, a basic Hampton or Doubletree, can be over $700 and this before taxes and fees. I’m not an elitist, but no way and I paying close to $1,000 per night for Ocean City!! |

HHI 400k, and I have to travel pretty regularly for kids' activities, usually staying somewhere on the east coast, but we've had to go a little further west occasionally. These are not vacations, so my concerns are primarily location (close to the event venue) and a decent night's sleep. I'm usually able to find something for $200/night and under, though rarely under $150 these days. I have found that it's all a crapshoot, and price in no way indicates cleanliness or other concerns (I've also stayed at nicer places along the way, like Omni, Waldorf, etc., and these are also very hit and miss). Instead, I just rely on reviews that will often alert me to issues unique to this particular hotel: roadside noise, uncomfortable beds, terrible bathroom setups, etc. I can't do a Super 8 type of place, but some of the Hampton Inns and Hilton Garden Suites have been better than the much pricier Hiltons, Marriotts, and Westins.
I recently stayed at a $600/night resort and was a bit shocked that the room and hotel were not much better than the lower level places I had been frequenting. |
Found the swingers… |
I am a fan of newish Hampton Inns and I make over $1m. I wouldn't do it for vacation, but for college visits, or short overnights, I like them better than expensive hotels that don't deliver a better experience. |

HHI 330k
Typically under $200 if possible (Hampton Inn, Aloft, Fairfield Inn, etc.) We just need a clean place to sleep - we aren't ones for hanging out in the hotel. Plus with 2 adult (college age) kids we need a 2nd room. It adds up. |
Always check the seams. Bed bugs don’t care how many stars the hotel has, and honestly the fancier hotels are probably more at risk due to the international level of guests. |
| Wow, I guess we are cheap. HHI 1 mil and I don’t think we’ve ever spent more than $400-500 per night for hotel/airbnb, with most trips being in the $250-$400 range. We never do all inclusive. The places we stay are perfectly nice, I can’t imagine why you would need to spend $700+ per night anywhere |
Agree! Especially an extra room just for son at the tune at $780/night. Oh h*ll no. |
You 1000% entitled to your opinions, which has zero influence on me. I still have an awesome life 😎. I don’t even care how you live yours 😆internet troll. |

HHI $550, but that is new for us- dual physicians and only 5-7 years out of residency.
Usually in the $200 range, but just booked an anniversary trip for just me and DH and spending $800/night. Most of our family vacationing is staying with my fam or in laws at various beach houses, so we rarely do hotels outside of work related travel. I am low key freaked out to spend so much just for lodging, but I’m excited to splurge on a trip for us. |
| We aim for a maximum of $300 per night. As long as the room is passably clean and in a safe location we’re fine. I’d rather spend our vacation budget on activities and experiences. $300k HHI |
| HHI: $700K. I try to aim for a 4 star hotel, and most of our trips are to Europe in the last 5 years. Hotel price per night under $300, but sometimes we do have to take 2 rooms as kids are now teenagers. Our airfare is generally heavily subsidized by points. and I use points for hotels when it makes sense. Exception is smaller places like villages in Norway that 3star hotels are your only option, but they are priced like a 4 star or traveling to Portugal in March shoulder season where you get 5 star hotels under 300 |
| Under $300. We pretty much stick to Hyatt and Hilton because we've had too many bad surprises. |
Nah. The fancier hotels clientele is much less likely to have uncontrolled bedbugs at home and much more likely to immediately and effectively exterminate if needed instead d letting the infestation get out of hand. |
