There are a surprising number of nonstops from DCA to MSN (5X per day on most days) serviced by both American (4x) and Delta (1x). Detroit has very slightly more flights but both are pretty accessible.
A2 is around 30-40 minutes from DTW while UW is only around 15 from MSN. |

Also if your kid likes to hit the gym -- Bakke is AMAZING.
Looks like DC is gonna be deciding between UNC and Wisconsin and it's gonna be a really tough choice!! |
Yes, I felt like my OOS dollars all went to Bakke
Tough choice indeed, although if your son is into engineering it'd be a no brainer. |
What about Indiana? |
| Thoughts on Wisconsin direct admit to business or UVA in-state? The risk of not getting into McCombs at UVA is making my DC lean towards Wisconsin. Cost isn’t a consideration. |
Absolutely go to UVA. If they don't get into McIntire, there are bigger fish to fry. 3.85+ GPA freshman year and campus involvement will get them in – not a big deal. Worst case senario they do UVA Econ, which many Wisconsin Business kids would take over their current school |

UVA in-state is appealing for lots of reasons (proximity and cost even greater than prestige).
That said, people love Wisconsin because it combines great academics with an amazing environment (albeit a cold one). I’m not sure I’ve seen a more universally enamored alumni base than Wisconsin. Wisconsin has not published their EA numbers but I suspect that their OOS acceptance rate will be marching into lower numbers in the years ahead. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the 25-30% range soon if they’re not already there. |
| I like Wisconsin, but go to UVA. |
|
Save the money, go to UVA! Go to Wisconsin for Grad school if they are still itching for a change of scenery. I know many happy UVA students, it really is a gem.
|
I’ll drink to that! |
| I’m from a Badger family, but UVA all day every day. |
My kid is a freshman at UW Madison and they revived an acidemic scholarship. |
Nice! My OOS kid was offered $25K by UMN, $0.00 by Wisconsin (didn't apply to Pitt). |
According to my current UW student, the school is truly a great balance of "work hard play hard." We did not tour UW before my DC was admitted. After the admitted student tour, my DC was all in - even committed before RD from their "top choice" where they were deferred. I liked the school on the tour, but I was not in love with it - felt like the PP who "didn't get it." Seeing the school through my DC's eyes changed that. Yes, it is absolutely freezing, but the kids are still outside and connected to nature by all the activities and exploring they do on the (frozen) lake - Swimming, boating, rowing, sailing, ice-skating, playing hockey, fishing, etc. My kid sent me some pictures of a tent set up on the frozen lake and kids inside playing poker🤷♀️ Plus, you can escape all the noise and lights from the city on the trail around the lake. Also, they got see the Northern Lights!! Having the campus right in the city makes life a little more accessible - especially for freshman and people without cars. They're not isolated on a campus far away from basics like grocery stores and pharmacies. They get all the excitement of the city, but have nature (the lake) at their doorstep. School spirit was very important to my DC. UW did not disappoint. Regarding the professors- it's refreshing having world class educators that are accessible to and engaged with with their students. Sometimes, my DC goes to office hours just to chat. |
With admission? Or later on in the process? Wondering whether to hold out hope or move on. |
