If your daughter doesn’t like “Virginian” culture, she’s probably trying to tell you that she doesn’t want to go to college in Virginia. It’s not that deep. Too sophisticated? Find a more urbane atmosphere in a more urban setting. Likely not a state flagship. Or head overseas like a previous poster has suggested.

UVA has a very private feel. You would never know it's public.

Distainful is not a word.

XO,
Sorority girl

I think most of us assumed OP had a typo, and what does being in a sorority have to do with anything?

Private schools in Virginia probably also have a Virginian vibe. It’s Virginia. OP’s daughter doesn’t object to a public feel, just to a Virginian feel.

But what is “a Virginia feel”? I’ve lived in CA, Mass, DC, Israel, London, LA and VA for the 25 years but couldn’t tell you what “a Virginia Feel” is from a N Carolina feel. Or a Maryland feel etc

I went to UVA and I have no idea what you mean by this. I’m going to guess that maybe your kids go, or went, to private high school and you assume that everything public is less-than?

As someone who was raised in NOVA left for Highschool and came back to the area for college-i know what the OP is saying.

After FCPS my daughter was ready to go out of state and finds the girls are so much friendlier in SC. Northern VA (and Richmond) can be rough for girls.

My FCPS senior son has had a much better experience and will hopefully stay in VA.

I couldn’t either, but apparently OP’s daughter could say.

They didn't say that at all. So cut the eye roll. William and Mary for example, has a very private feel.

But yes, I do mean distaste. She's not interested in something that is centered around Viriginian culture.

Haha what is Virginian culture?

It's fascinating to me that there is so little perspective on oneself that you don't even realize different places have different cultures. Yes, including Virginia EVEN THOUGH YOU RAISED YOUR KIDS HERE. These are the same people who would trash U Alabama or whatever.

Yes, why are people so sensitive about this?

Born and raised Virginian here and I assume it’s like an accent — I don’t hear one, but if I go to New York I’m told I have one.

I don’t have an issue with saying there’s a “Virginian feel” even if I have no idea what that means. I have an issue with someone being disdainful of Virginians, however. The daughter doesn’t seem to like Virginia or Virginians, so she should probably not go to school here.
