I have three kids in college so I understand college life at least as well as you. The culture of schools varies. UVA is a school where many eat alone and community isn’t the biggest focus. Many colleges are different and there are groups of kids enjoying each other’s company at dining halls and elsewhere during the day (not just at parties). It doesn’t matter to some but it matters to others.

LOL well I actually have four kids and two went to UVA so by your own definition I know more than you, weirdo

You really sound immature.

Maybe that poster's one or two other kids didn't get into UVA?

Huh? Which poster? The one with two kids who went there, or the weirdo?

Nope, all got in. None chose it. I’m not criticizing UVA and it’s weird that mom of four thinks that I am. It’s a great school but has a certain vibe that works for many but not for all. Kids needs to consider fit.

UVA definitely has a (well-deserved) reputation as preppy/privileged. My Hispanic daughter from a well-regarded NOVA public refused to apply after visiting and talking to students there. Students, especially girls, have a reputation of dressing up for football games, wearing dresses and even heals. This was the scene she was looking for She also sees photos on IG of her high school friends still hanging out with other HS friends.

UMD wasn’t founded by Mr. Jefferson. Because UVa was founded by Mr. Jefferson, the most elite Virginians have sought his University for generations. It’s where the wealthy and connected families want to be and have always wanted to be. In many wants it’s more like a private college in that regard. That’s why you have a wealthy, snobby group at UVa that is different from top students at other flagships.

So is it the OOS students who bring the “snobbishness”?

DP. The most elite of the Greek houses are a combo of wealthy, connected Virginians and wealthy OOS kids.

True, and those kids are a very small fraction of the total student body. My kid is in a “diverse-ish” sorority at UVA. They have a good time, study hard, and are involved in campus life outside of the Greek system. Most come from in-state and OOS public high schools.

+1. UVA is only 26% Greek - so most students are doing their own thing in the 700 clubs and activities. My own kid worked on The Cavalier, the student paper, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and the Jefferson Society debate team. She never once set foot in a frat/siririty, which are all off-campus.

Yay Jeff Soc!

-UVA alum who got a great STEM education there, often ate alone in between labs, had a diverse social circle, and is highly amused by these repetitive discussions.

That has not been the case in a really really long time.

You have 3 kids in college, none at UVA and yet not only are you STILL on a college admissions board but you're specifically taking time to trash UVA? And on Thanksgiving week when your college kids are home?

What the heck is wrong with you?

Not worth trying to change the minds of the haters, especially ill informed ones. Haters gonna hate. It's a great school, especially for in-state.

But none of your kids actually went there so you're in no position to judge the school. You don't know the "vibe" first hand at all. That poster does.

The girls do wear dresses to football games, paired with cowboy boots ( not heels lol). You will see this outfit at lots of college football games

True, but they don’t dress like that on weekdays.

Isn’t this true at lots of schools though? What is wrong with it? Isn’t it better than pajamas or sweats?

Not necessarily. FFV’s compromise the upper crust at UVA. If you don’t know what a first family of VA is, you need to google it. These are some of the wealthiest and most influential families going back to the founding of the US. Folks forget VA was THE center of national power back in the day.

I have a UVA kid and I literally don't understand this uproar. I have another kid at Michigan and there you have $$$$$ monied kids from NJ and NY. Insane money and snobbery. No, they will never fully accept my kid. My kid will never run in their circles. And IT'S OKAY.

My kids have their own friends and their own lives. These are both large schools. My kids (at both places) are very happy. End of story.
