People who cut in line

Anonymous
The year our younger daughter was one and could only say “rawr” I looked into a dinosaur costume but didn’t get it. The night before Halloween my husband said he really wished we dressed her as a dinosaur. I took her to a costume shop to figure out the right size but didn’t realize exactly how crazy the line would be. I asked someone and they said they’d been in line for over 2 hrs! There was no way I could wait that long with my daughter.

I had a coupon for buy one, get one. I asked a person about 5 people back from the front if I gave them money for my costume, the coupon (to pay for theirs) and $20 as a thank you would they buy my costume for me. They got really mad and said I could wait in line like everyone else. So I went to the person about 10 back in line and gave them the same offer. They were thrilled to get their costume for free and $20 extra - and I still think it was well worth the $20 to not wait in line!

What culture doesn’t stand in line?

NP - I was at Target in Gaithersburg waiting in a huge line and as I reach the register, an Asian lady walks in front cutting in line. I say, ma’am, the end of the line is back there. Then a couple of women in the line yell at me that she doesn’t understand our cultural norms, so I should just let her go. WTH? If you move here, it’s time to learn our social norms.

You sound racist.
I'm an asian lady and I often walk up to the front of those types of lines because stupid people are waiting for one person to finish on a self checkout register when there are several available registers that people are not using.

I don't cut in line but I tell the stupid people waiting that there are other check outs available to help the line move.

If it's one line for many registers, the cultural norm here is to alert the next person to go next. We very much honor the "next person" here. You will get called out by anyone else paying attention.

Same thing when a new register opens in a multi-line system. The cashier is very careful to call people over who are "more next" and folks with etiquette will alert people ahead of them. Everyone benefits because the line is shorter. Only those in selfish cultures would try to spy it as a vulnerability and take the spot. It's very un-American. It's a small but effective way to "fit in" here if that's your goal.

This was during the holidays and it was not for self checkout. I was responding to the post above. And people specifically defended the cutter because she looked Asian. That wasn't me.

I almost wonder if this her her “ ruse.” Sounds like she has figured out how to jump in front by saying” just want to look at…”😀

Sorta had the opposite….i was in line for a drink ( I’m 5 ft) the man behind me quite tall. Bartender looked over me and asked him what he wanted so I said my order. She then looked down at me with annoyance and said “ oh, I thought she ( other server) got you….then proceeded to give the man his drink and rolled eyes and said something like thanks for waiting ! Like I was the entitled one! Not as egregious but has happened before to me. Hate being short. I blame my mother😀😀😀

Middle Easterners too.
They fill-in any open space or gap (ie personal space) - they do this when driving, standing in line, in an elevator, etc.
Personal space means nothing to them.

Eastern Europeans. I got pushed by 2 aggressive "ladies" while trying to board a bus. I told them: Stop pushing. They did.
