How do you get the 'DC look'?

I'm still waiting to hear what NYC neighborhood the OP comes from, where they can spot intruders at 50 paces.

Anyone who says DC doen't have a 'style' has never been to a a Saturday soccer game and seen 237 moms dressed exactly alike. Ooops, I'm talking inner western MoCo. Totally different look.

I normally do not notice these things but every women I passed on the street, at the hotel and everywhere was wearing all black. In northern California, whenever I go to business meetings I always feel overdressed even when I do not wear a suit.

Interesting> I feel out of place when I go to LA, particularly for work. I cant put my finger on it besides saying that I am not chic.

Why don't you try talking to a sales person or personal shopper at Saks or Neiman Marcus. Also try some boutiques - Urban Chic, Julia Farr, Ginger.

This whole thread is why I don't waste time at DCUM. I started reading this post because it looked interesting and lighthearted, yet quickly deteriorated into a (boring) catfight. Yikes!

I'm also laughing - if she doesn't know her Hamptons, she surely doesn't know the city.

Yes, me too. I grew up in NYC and I guess I missed the memo for my neighborhood...

I have learned to always wear black and heels in NY. In LA I just feel fat.

Just be happy wearing what makes you feel comfortable with style. We allow you to wear a t-shirt from the White House!

I did too. And I'm guessing OP just meant the Upper East Side.

If I wanted to be comfortable I never would have gotten out of bed. Coming from FL, I was shocked as hell to see the disheveled mommies around here. Wouldn't have left the house in FL looking like some of the trolls around Northern Virginia.
Women of Arlington and Vienna, take off those Birkenstocks and Tevas you're wearing with socks and go get a pedicure and put some heels higher than 3" on, for Pete's sake. Don't tell me that you can't walk in them, lazyass.
Also, go to Target, buy some Nice n' Easy and touch up those long-neglected gray roots. Not a good look on anyone, no matter if you do compost your kitchen waste and still roll a Prius.

I agree with this comment, if you are out and about without your children. But heels higher than 3" aren't practical if you are stay at home mom and spend a whole day chasing kids.

And OP - wear whatever you want to wear. You're not the first and last person from NYC who complains about the fashion in DC, but somehow most people adjust. You'll be fine.
