How do you get the 'DC look'?

Anonymous
Jeez. I'm from NYC and I LOVE DC because around here there's so much less pressure to look stylish. Relax. Where what you happen to like. No one's looking at you as closely as you look at yourself.

Don't know what the typical DC is, even though I lived here for the past 10 years. I have a corporate job and I do wear a lot of bright colors with my suits. A nice scarf or a shawl or even a brooch. I don't shy away from turquioise or fuschia. I travel to NYC as well as the rest of the country quite extensively, haven't received any negative comments.

IDK, sounds like you are letting yourself go. If you don't want DH trading you in, step it up.

honestly, let's admit that we dress for other women, not for our DHs. In my experience, men only notice your body (if you've gained or lost weight, are toned, etc.) and really don't notice clothes, jewelry, etc. guarantee you that my DH would not be able to tell Tory Burch from Target. and I've never ever had a man comment on my pedicure.

I agree to this. My DH much prefers me dressed up in a casual outfit than if I'm too dressed up or wearing really high heels, because then that slows us down and he finds it annoying. I prefer to dress up, so its been a silly fight over the years.

Jewelery is usually classic pieces worn everyday that don't have too much bling. I remember looking at David Yurman with a friend in a department store and wondering why anyone would spend so much money on fake jewelry. Costimes jewelry is definetely not the norm here.

Large purses or totes are popular too. A small bag just is not practical for me because sometimes I don't want to carry my laptop/briefcase along but need to have a few files.

Not sure where you live, but in Chevy Chase you see tons of tacky Yurman bracelets and faux diamond studs as big as the Ritz.

Your wardrobe should reflect "you." If you are from NYC, then dress the way you love, even if it's different from here. If you are most at home in the white jeans look, go for it, if it's who you really are. I like seeing different looks on different women and I admire a bunch of them, even when they aren't my style. To me a woman's outfit is a reflection of her confidence (or lack thereof). That's what I notice most. My coworker is wearing a really nice jacket today that is not in style at all, but the cut and the coloring and overall look is perfect for who she is. I wouldn't wear it in a million years, but it's ideal for her.

Are you sure they are fake?

Agree. My DH loves the girl next door look. If I'm dressed up, I often snap at him if he does not notice me, but his respons is normally that the only clothes he likes are the ones laying on the bedroom floor. I focus more on taking care of my body rather than what clothes they are in (as long as my ass look great in the pants that is).
