Club swim isn't a team sport. |
SC season starts in September. Are you really suggesting that a kid that turns 11 or 13 in October should still be swimming as a 10 or 12 year old nearly 6 months later during the SC season champs meets?! Club swimming is an individual sport, there is no reason to swim as any age other than the age you actually are. |
DP - unless a kid is swimming unaffiliated, it's not an entirely individual sport. It's not a team sport in the way that soccer or softball are, but club meets do keep track of team scores/results. So kids are scoring points for their team, even while they're swimming individual events. As an aside, my kids' club absolutely makes them feel like they're on a team. They cheer for each other at meets, hang out, etc. That's a huge part of the fun. |
Expand - why? What level of coach? I doubt there are any head coaches of swimming age. Obviously this would be a huge culture shift. In response to a bad egg somewhere? The reps and head coach should fix that specific instance. |
Some kids (probably not 8U) might be motivated in that May bday situation knowing they need to go faster. Not 100% that May bday is bad for summer swimmers. Sometimes when things aren’t “fair,” kids step up (again prob not 8U). And if May is bad then April is not much better, but March is close April & May so maybe March is bad too for summer swim |
Yes to all the above plus RELAYS in club meets (wish there were more relays). It isn’t soccer or basketball but there is some teamwork in club swim. |
I have winter and spring kids. It is what it is. The only thing that bothers me about age rules are the records. I don't love a kid who is actually 13 at the time of a swim setting an 11-12 record, but that's how it is. Someone faster will come along eventually anyway. |
Hadn’t thought about records, yeah, I don’t love a kid older than an age group holding a record when they’re not actually that age. But yep all records will fall anyway. |
Let’s say your kid ages up on their birthday, and their birthday is the day after Divisionals. They’re 8 at Divisionals, but 9 at All Stars. They’re the fastest 8 year old the county has ever seen in 25m freestyle. Are they allowed to swim at All Stars? Which freestyle event? What’s their seed time?
Now what happens if their birthday is July 1? Can they qualify for multiple freestyle events at All Stars? |
MCSL should follow the same rule as USA Swimming. If you age up during the summer, well that's the way it goes. |
Another example of making a mountain of a molehill.
MCSL is rec level swim! Stop focusing on what isn’t important. |
Yep. There are a million other things that would have to be dealt with. Does a 12 year old who turns 13 mid-season switch practice groups? How does high point within the age group work? “Regular” lineups having to be adjusted mid-season. Etc. Yes, all can be handled/resolved, but there is so much - so much - compressed into these 6 weeks or whatever that no coach or rep should have to deal with even more of this. It’s summer swimming. Who cares? It’s for fun. |
There is little to no teamwork practice for relays at the clubs with multiple sites. The relays are made up of the fastest kids across all sites of the club. Many times the kids are from different sites and have never practiced together before. |
Summer swim team is rec and fun. The team spirit and unity and having fun in a mixed age and mixed gender team is the goal. Stop making it more than it is. Kids being the same age the whole season makes sense so that the team knows what's to plan for. Many coaches are college kids and not pros anyway. Let it go people and let your kids have fun. |
I just cannot believe how much traction this argument gets every single year. |
