ugh I hate both colleges now thanks to this thread. if the cmc and amherst boosters and trolls are any indication, the alums and marketing people paid to comment on this thread are all insufferable.

So make actual commentary on your thoughts instead of dragging the thread down worse.

In my opinion, everything presented has shown cmc to be a better choice for OP’s child. I understand wanting a connection of colleges with your child, but that doesn’t make much sense when there’s a clear choice for her son that he’d really enjoy the experience of.

I would be really happy to send a kid to either of these schools.

What's wrong with STEM? Obviously Amherst is going to attract STEM students when it provides the best resources in the country for it!

He isn't thrilled at the idea, but I want my son at my alma mater more than a small college in California with less prestige!

Got it, OP! Sounds like you need to have a family conversation rather than involving DCUM. I would say that nationally and internationally, Amherst has the better brand but CMC is also a nice college with good outcomes. CMC is helped a lot by it's association to Pomona whereas Amherst is the "star" of it's own cohort followed by Wellesley.

Can you elaborate more? As someone who's "in the know" about American colleges from another countries, neither of these colleges have branding, nor are well known-they are hardly known in the United States. Also, I don't see how CMC is helped by its association with Pomona when most of the things it is good at, it is much better at than Pomona.

“In the know”. You keep using that phrase. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

Can you respond to the comment and not be annoying? Thanks.

DC preferred Amherst over CMC for both STEM and humanities double major

Why?

In part due to open, flexible curriculum

Thanks for the comment. I'm sure it will help OP.

It's a typo, brianiac. By the way, you might check a style guide on the use of ellipses and punctuation.

Sure, illiterate surf.

Oh Lord. Pot, meet kettle?

CMC for both subjects, though if he's unsure, maybe Amherst. Unlike other comments, I really think for these two interests, these colleges are really similar. You will get a bit more support and access to faculty at CMC (it looks like for philosophy there's 2 professors for every 1 major) and access to the Claremont College system as whole gives you 3 other colleges with philosophy faculty. Econ will be a bit different, since a significant portion of Claremont McKenna majors in economics and it has its own school of economics and finance. These days, Claremont recruits more than Amherst for finance, so if that's the goal, there's a solution.

I'd way 5Cs versus Open Curriculum and access to more majors, also the amount of students between the two, since Claremont is much larger than standalone Amherst.

As a future-looking suggestion, a student interested in philosophy may benefit from keeping the Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy in mind. The program has national and international appeal, and has attracted students from the Claremonts, for example.

Why did you link this? Hamilton is not the college that is being talked about.

D.P. It's information that could be lead to an exciting, as well as fully funded, opportunity. Don't interfere with it unless you have a good reason to do so.
