Canadian here. I have no idea, but I am grateful. Six months ago I was convinced Poilevre had it in the bag. Then Trump got involved.

A couple of other important events happened before that. Freeland stepped down because she wasn't happy with Trudeau antics. That was bold. Then Trudeau had the grace and foresight to step down early as leader to give the Liberal party a chance to find another leader. That paved the way for Carney.

But I'll admit that the tariffs, and then the talk of 51st state, helped to return Canadians to voting Liberal.

It really gives us a "what if" sort of thing - what if Biden had gracefully stepped down and let Harris become president for a year? Or what if he'd recognized his fallibility and said three years ago he wasn't running for a second term, opening the door to an actual primary?

Alas. At least Canada got it right.

Honestly, if Biden stepped down the outcome would have been the same. The right wing media would have considered it a conspiracy to elect Kamala and Trump would have still have won lol.

The Mid Atlantic would like to get in on this deal.

It’ll be fun to see how a 4th liberal term works out for Canada.

The election was supposed to be about housing costs, immigration, and self-sufficiency.

A few months ago it all became about Trump.

Good old Trump - killing elections for others since 2017.

Good for you, Canada. F Trump.

No leaders in democracies from the COVID era have fared well, unless they are an autocrat (eg, Xi, Putin, MBS). So much PTSD and voters want to lash out.

Smartest thing Trump ever did was try to blame Democrats for COVID. He has uncanny instincts.

Our elected leaders are a reflection of who we are collectively.

Then he would have been a lame duck both on domestic and foreign affairs and it would have been horrible for our country. A parlimentary system is different than ours and you cannot just equate them.

I woke up to the news Carney had won, and immediately felt such deep envy. I wish Canada could take over the US. I wish the US could just be fricking normal for ten minutes. Why is this country so fricking weird? WHY?

Yes! Can someone start a movement for the USA to be the 11th province? Both because that would be kind of amazing if it happened but also to highlight how stupid the 51st state idea is.

And if Trump really wants a 51st state... hello DC has been right here waiting the whole time

He was able to get very little done after the House flipped anyway.

Polievre lost his seat. I wonder if that tells him anything.

NDP leader Singh also lost his seat and the party collapsed.

This is the chef’s kiss - not only did he lose an election that was all but guaranteed three months ago, he lost his own seat.

I think Trump assumed he was so unliked by Canada that endorsing Carney would turn people to PP. didn’t work. Canadians aren’t stupid.

Can’t believe the BQ got more seats. I like Singh - he could have done a lot for the country but he’s become wish washy the last few years.
