I believe Boston can be considered a college town though! Here’s a list from Travel + Leisure earlier this year, with some unexpected places and a few surprises. This is obviously a very subjective topic without much in the way of official metrics.

PP is weirdly rigid about her definition of "college town".

"College towns revolve around college sports." LOL, no.

You think Chapel would be the same without UNC basketball? Blacksburg wouldn’t be on the map if not for VT football.

That may be true for some schools but it’s not true for most.

Can you name college towns in which NCAA sports do play a major role in the town?

Ann Arbor
Durham
South Bend

Are you screwing with us?

Those are “college towns in which NCAA sports do play a major role in the town“, as requested by the PP.

They are towns people like tha happen to have a college (or 2-4 colleges) nearby.

College Station, Texas
Now that’s a college town.

Agree.

A college town is a place where ther identity of the town is centered on the university.

a.k.a. middle of nowhere

Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, Athens GA are middle of nowhere? These are high culture towns with proximity to major cities.

I thought Charlottesville was in the middle of nowhere. Not much around

well i live there and you could not be more wrong. Google what to do in Charlottesville. Start with the art scene, vineyards, Montecello, Poplar Forest, tour UVA itself, a world UNESCO site, walk the old mall for a fun stroll and great food. For fantastic french food try Fleurie on the mall. Great seafood and BBQ places. Antiquing. Driving. fabullous golfing. horseback riding. canoeing. hot air balloons. great old book stores. hiking. gorgeous countryside....

This. I always enjoy my time in Charlottesville. Sorry if it’s not a concrete jungle.

Signed,
Someone who lived in concrete jungles.

Don’t forget DC

Adding Amherst MA and Columbus OH

And Charleston does have a college town vibe, just high end.

Umm, no. Have you even been there?

Another great college town I haven’t seen yet on this thread is Bozeman.

What makes DC or Charleston a college town?
