Top universities are “top” essentially because of professional schools?

harvard has been favoring the wealthy elites for over 200 years now. makes no difference

Not anymore! I'm a Harvard grad. DC applied 7 years ago with top stats and legacy stats (no big donations -we can't afford it) but on paper this very nice kid probably looks like like a boring white kid of privilege. Deferred; waitlisted. Now applying to Harvard Law, also a legacy there and I'm pretty sure he's going to be bumped for a DEI hooked kid.

Does Harvard Law give legacy preference too or is it just the undergrad? Is it for graduates of any of the schools or just the law school?

Just undergrad. I don't think any of thr professional schools there conver legacy

unless there are large donations attached. of course, then you don't even need legacy.

of course legacy is s big thing at Harvard Las. All of my fellow HLS grads sent their kids there. That's why there are neverending social events, seminars, talks, reunions, etc. with the message "give!". Of course tge kid has to have the stars: 3.99 GPA and 179 LSAT at the 75th percentile

There is no top 4 only Top 6 for law schools and top 14. Top 6 has 7 schools--Yale Stanford Harvard Chicago Columbia NYU and now Penn is inching it's way up and some put it in there.

But you knew that?

Of course there is a top 4. See rankings here. Duke, Harvard, Penn UvA tied for 4. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings

Duke and UVA at #4.
Totally laughable.

DP. You can always tell when you've won an argument on DCUM when a mom uses "totally laughable" or "you're insufferable". Both are terrible woman-speak terms that convey no substantive meaning and add nothing of use to the thread - they are just a trite, non-substantive arrogant slams which serve no purpose but to make the poster feel momentarially superior before going about their miserable life. A verbal b@tch slap, if you will.

Fine[b]
. You’re delusional if you think Duke and UVA are top 4 law schools. Happy now?

But UVA IS ranked at no. 4. You just haven't kept up. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings

None of the top law schools are supplying data to USNWR anymore. Try to keep up.

But publicly available ABA 509 required disclosures still reveal the admissions data.

Grad schools were not nearly as important to universities ($$ or reputation wise) when USNWR started ranking universities in the 80s.
The Harvards and Yales of the world rose to prominence with their undergrad offerings. There has been a fair amount of discussion about law degrees on this thread. JD degrees (graduate degrees) were not the standard over undergrad law degrees until almost 1970.

With the exception of a handful of privates like Johns Hopkins or Rice, along with the ivies of Princeton and Brown, most universities derive their reputations primarily from just these two subjects. Take UVA for example. Historically, it is not well known in either stem or humanities quite frankly. Just compare their department rankings in economics or history to the more historically prestigious Michigan and Wisconsin. But, UVA is seen as comparable and even better than those two, based purely on business and law schools. Furthermore, undergraduate selectivity seems to be primarily generated through competitive pre law/pre-mba finance bros.

It might be the other way around.

If Princeton started a medical school, a law and a business school tomorrow, I bet they would be top 50 right out of the gate and probably top 20 by the time their first class graduated and top 10 by the time that class had kids old enough to go to those professional schools.

Well it definitely takes time to establish a reputation within the professional community, but Yale did opened its business school in 1976 (70 years after Northwestern Kellogg and HBS, 60 years after MIT Sloan, 50 years after Stanford GSB, and nearly 100 years after Wharton), and five decades later they are considered top 10.

+1. One poster provides facts, the other just hurls insults. UVA is no 4 and also no. 1 by Princeton review for best professor and student experience. We toured recently (tours stop in Nov). It's our DC's top choice. He's legacy at one of three. Rankings for UVA: https://www.law.virginia.edu/news/202407/uva-law-no-1-best-professors-best-classroom-experience#:~:text=The%20University%20of%20Virginia%20School,in%20Best%20Career%20Prospects%2C%20No.

+1. Other than a few tweaks to methodology, there has been virtually no change. T14 is still T14. And law school deans are happy because they no longer have to spend a fortune in checking and rechecking data before submitting to USNWR.

Agreed. One year they aren’t in the top 10 and the next top 5.
