Simone Biles

I'm not sure about Suni with all that she's been through. What a remarkable comeback for her.

And hats off to the GOAT Simone. She one even with a mistake on bars.

All of these women deserve so much respect. Rebecca Andrade was incredible, as usual, and Alice D'Amato's performance today was so lovely. Then there's Kaylia Neymour. She absolutely killed bars and was so close to the podium. She is only 17, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her.

I hope she does!

I used to feel this way, but those girls suffered so much physical and emotional abuse and look so frightened and malnourished compared to gymnasts of today. I love that this generation of gymnasts look like athletes and are no longer considered over the hill at 19.

Will someone please explain to me how you all have come to believe that gymnasts cannot be balletic and graceful once they become powerful and muscular? I love that they are allowed to look like athletes, but if you think that means they suddenly cannot be graceful, professional dancers would like a word.

You can be both, people. No one wants to bring back the treatment of gymnast from the 70s. Good Lord.

I think Suni is graceful in all the events.

And Jordan has great dance, it just isn’t as lyrical. Andrade, too.

I had no idea Suni Lee had incurable kidney disease. What a brave and determined woman. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/29/world/olympics/suni-lee-gymnastics-kidney-disease.html?unlocked_article_code=1._k0.XiUU.F11OCP0D3ht_&smid=url-share

Two separate ones actually. It’s astonishing.

How does it feel being so completely, totally and utterly stupid? Like how are you able to navigate the world?

I was watching the floor routines today. It's tumble tumble tumble jazz hands tumble tumble jazz hands, rinse and repeat. In the past they did a lot of ballet training. They even had a team piano player (no recorded music) who could time the music to the timing of the skills. Now you see them finish before or after the end of the music. People used to clap along, and there were themes like polka routine, rock and roll routine, romantic theme etc more like figure skating.

While we're talking about the treatment in the 1970s, it hasn't exactly been wonderful in recent years.

I'd be just as happy if they got rid of the dance bits and just focused on the tumbling like the men. That's what we're all here for anyway, admit it.

That said, I thought a couple of Andrade's floor routines were the best in terms of rhythm and catchy energy, hers didn't feel as much like jazz hands tacked on to tumbling.

Right. Andrade does not have ballet-like grace, but she has tremendous artistry and musicality. Her performance quality and power combine to make her one of the best in the world.

Agreed, she's a delight to watch. As is Simone the GOAT!

How does it feel to be so rude?

I think the issue is that there is so much gymnastics in our face, but so much talk about it on TV (the gymnast are interviewed over and over and over again and we see human interest stories on them over and over and over again) but that same time there are some out there that are finding women's gymnatics less intriguing. Yes, the rules now call for a diffrent sport than we are used to, so maybe this means it is not as TV friendly as it used to be. Maybe they should not show hours of it every night, because it is not conducive to that anymore.

Yeah, but Simone's scores and difficulty are always above Suni. Suni never beats Simone. Unless something goes wrong and Simone drops out or makes a huge mistake, Suni is competing for the Silver or Bronze in AA. She just doesn't have the difficulty level.

Are we counting the time Simone quit?

I am 100% okay with an athlete putting their health over a medal. They shouldn't have to vault on a broken leg, or risk a broken neck because they have the twisties (my DD is a very mediocre diver, and it's something that affects them as well). Good for her taking care of herself.

The fact she was able to come BACK from that - and perform even better than before - is truly astonishing. Who else could do that?!

I think what has Biles has done to come back is incredible, but I would say that Suni Lee’s comeback from two kidney diseases is equally astonishing.

These girls have grit!

I'm always amazed at how people are always trying to pit women against women like you have to choose 1 as your favorite. Brittany vs Christina, it's insane actually.

How was I pitting them against each other? I said they were both great!

It was thrilling watching Suni fight for the bronze in her final rotation. Her floor routine was anything but boring!

But I am wondering what everybody else feels about the big fake eyelashes? (Track and field women wear them too). It just looks stupid to me.......... but am getting use to it.

What do you think?

Not a fan but it’s the style for many women of a certain age (which we are clearly not! 😆) I’m sure one day they will look back on it and cringe the way I do at looks from the early 2000s.

It’s actually all ages and mostly Black women wear them. Some look great some look weird.
