"I can do that too" when looking at art in museums

You sound like an obnoxious snob.

If you think the art workd judges pieces objectively, and cannot be tricked , you are naive.

You have no idea what I think, about art or anything else.

How could no one have mentioned this film yet? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Kid_Could_Paint_That

I watched this years ago. The film left in to the viewers to decide, but I don't believe the girl was doing the paintings without parental help.

One time the “art” was baloney pinned to the walls. I think any of us could pin lunch meat to a wall.

You'll really like the taped banana, then. And the fact someone walked up to it and ate it. And declared he had just done PERFORMANCE ART.

Ellsworth Kelly is correct and I thought it was trash. Realistically ellsworth probably didn't even paint this canvas black, some unpaid trust funder intern did. It just stood out to me as egregious head up your own behind art world nothing. And yes, basically anyone could do it.

And you can certainly critique art that’s not my point- but that is an especially ridiculous critique.

I agree. It's like a person I know who wanted to sing, "Ooh, Baby, Baby" at an open mic but she couldn't come in on the right beat. Or those people who think it's so easy to write a hit pop song.

If it's so easy, why aren't they doing it?

Go do it and show us how good you are! Maybe you'll get into the museum too or maybe you'll see there's more to making art than you think.

I don’t understand contemporary art. At all. Yet my DD who is an artist can appreciate it and stare at it in the museum all day long.

Different strokes for different folks.

Maybe because it’s stupid and not worth doing?

I can paint a canvas black, too, but why the hell would I want to?

False. Modern art for the most part is quite complex. So your premise is incorrect. Now you also need to be able to get your art into a museum which is a pretty difficult task.

But yes carry on believing you can do it

Is that the reason the orange man won? We want to believe any idiot can be President?

I appreciate your staunch defense of modern art. But I wasn't saying it would be easy to get into a gallery, I was saying it would be easy to hang a baggie on the wall that contains literal trash. Landing in a gallery takes acceptance of the gatekeepers and kingmakers. That's about politics, not mechanics.

But is it 'easy?' Someone had to be the first. You may not like it but doing something first is really difficult.

Those immersed in the art world will deem some art not worthwhile. At the same time, they’ll scoff at those they consider “unsophisticated” deeming art the art “expert” likes as not worthwhile. Because they think credentials mean something in art. But fundamentally, if they’re able to call some art garbage, anyone can call any art they want garbage. There is no objective truth in art, no matter what the snobs will tell you.
