| FWIW when I was young (decades ago) 10% was considered standard and 15% was for excellent service. Min wage for tipped employees was 1.25 in 1972 (I just graduated h.s and waitressed that summer) which would be 10.16 toda. |
And how much did a 1 bedroom apartment in DC cost in 1972? I bet it wasn't $300-$400, which is what it would have cost in 1972 dollars at today's prices. |
| I always wonder if people just don’t understand that wait staff serve multiple tables an hour. So they are not just going to be making $10/hr plus the 10% or whatever. They will be getting tips from multiple tables. Even with the lower wage, waitstaff in popular busy restaurants bring home hundreds of dollars a night. Some of you act like these people are making so little money-they are not. The last time we went to our neighborhood favorite restaurant the waitress was serving 6 tables. figure everyone stays about an hour and she kept that same average or so-that is very good money. |
