I actually find this last post quite humorous knowing how much the staff LOVES and adores him. Good luck with your new dentist.

I am in the same situation as the last poster. I have always questioned the amount of "work" my child needed. and am now so angry at myself for not questioning my gut feeling.

I was forwarded to this today by a friend. She knew we've gone to Dr. Alalouf for years, and she knew I had had doubts about him. My son has had extensive work done and he would often use the same line "if it were my own son, this is what I'd do". (after a few times, it sounded so insincere) I was also a bit turned off by the heavy marketing tactics. I felt unsure about Dr. Alalouf at times as it seems my son ALWAYS needed expensive work, but I love the staff in his office. They are all so warm and friendly and go out of their way to make the kids feel confortable. After hearing this today my two immediate thoughts were whether all of my sons often painful procedures were necessary and did his staff have any idea of this before hand (maybe they in fact reported him). I am mad at myself that I didn't trust my instrincts to switch practices beforehand. We have checkups this month and we will be swtiching dentist.

IF DR ALALOUF'S STAFF REPORTED HIM WOULD THEY STILL BE WORKING FOR HIM?? I AM A DENTAL HYGIENIST I AM SO SURPRISED TO SEE ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. I HAVE WORKED FOR SO MANY DIFFERENT PRACTICES WHERE I HAVE FELT UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE DENTIST'S DIAGNOSIS THAT I HAVE LEFT THE PRACTICE. IT WAS STATED EARLIER THAT THIS DR DID NOT HAVE A HIGH TURNOVER.

I am schocked how anyone could ever describe Dr Alalouf ( Dr. A). has being money hungry.

Not only do I think he is a remarkable dentist my family doctor also agrees with me.

In the five years I have been going there I HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED TO LEAVE THE ROOM WHILE HE IS WORKING ON MY KIDS . HOWEVER, I HAVE CHOSEN TO LEAVE THE ROOM BECAUSE MOST KIDS DO BETTER WHEN THEIR PARENTS ARE NOT AROUND.
DR. Alalouf is ONE of the VERY few doctors in todays world that will sit and answear ALL your questions and NEVER rush you.

When I asked him or the office staff to donate to my childern's silent auction at school they have always said , " YES".

Also, over the past five years I have seen his staff at a local gym or shopping and they are very friendly to my kids and I. They always say DR. Alaouf has such a talent for dentistry and working with kids.

Honestly, I think people should focus on OTHER doctors placing tubes in kids ears all the time and giving allergy medicine like candy.

Dr Alalouf has always been very professional, knowledgeable, and conservative.

Dr Alalouf sure gets an "A" for me. It is amazing to see kids with special needs in his office feel so very comfortable. I can see this over the past FIVE years when I walk down the halls with my kids for dental care. I can tell you from going to him with my kids for FIVE years Dr. A is the type of peerson that choose to work with childern cause he TRULY wants the best for them.
Just look at the pictures of him with his family when you are in the office.
If you called every person on file in his office that he has seen, I am sure YOU WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO HAVE HIM FOR YOUR DENTIST.

Not only do I think he is great my kids also do!!!

FYI I have left messages with the ADA that Dr Alalouf was not treated fair but NO ONE CALLS ME BACK.
I have several examples to give them but they NEVER CALL BACK.
Truly makes you wounder about our system

As I read the posts it proves that we can have different views on this subject. My daughter has gone to Dr. Alalouf for the last few years and we've never had a problem with him, even though we have heard rumors that there were these issues with unnecessary care.

My dilemma going forward is will I be able to trust him when/if he tells me that my child will need a procedure that could be long/painful/costly.

I just don't have an answer for this right now - and it makes me very concerned for the future. One of the greatest things about Kids Teeth, is the way they take care of our children and distract them from the sometimes unpleasant task of dentistry - so I'd hate to leave the practice.

I just don't know what to do going forward - but it really places me and my fellow parents in a very uncomfortable position of deciding to possibly put our children through a possible unnecessary procedure. Or can we just have faith that whatever he's done in the past (if anything) will not be repeated?

Signed,
A very confused and hurt parent.

I am responding to the last person's post. Whenever a doctor or dentist recommends extensive work of any kind, the recommendation is to always get a second opinion. Sometimes these opinions may differ, then you either get a third opinion or go with your gut. If you have always loved Dr. A or the office, you can stay there, see Dr. M, and if something comes up go get a second opinion or decide the information you were given is good enough for you to make an informed decision as a parent. Due to the suspension, Dr. A will be taking classes and getting supervision. He will probably be the most educated pediatric dentist in the area. I am more concerned that he will be afraid to make a recommendation for treatment when it is needed.

I am really shocked at the venoumous nature of some of the posts though. The last one of the person who is "concerned" I think is where many people are coming from. You hear these things about someone you put your child in the care of and you question what you should do. However, we do this everyday when we go to the Dr. or we take our children to the doctor. Again - if anyone recommends extensive procedures, a second opionon or getting enough information yourself using some of the websites listed on these posts is a good idea.

Dr. A is not what a lot of people say in these posts. In fact - he does not charge any more than other dentists in the area, but he chooses to use his profit margin to make the office a much nicer place for our children - rather than buy a boat, etc. He lives in Gaithersburg, not in some fancy Potomac house, etc.

I have read through the whole thing over and over again. Debating if I should join the bashing. I am in the medical field, and bashing a doctor for any reason is unethical to me. I have been to Dr. A. my son was treated. My son was put to sleep. My husband and I were told treatment was being done. We were told the facts and understood & agreed. BUT: More work than discussed was done, it was not noticed until an additional xray from another dentist was done. My son is 2, DR. A has children. How could he of all people live with himself knowing that he did this to other child granted my son felt no pain? We had a nice bit of change go to his pocket, but my son will never know, but we will. I have refereed all my friends to Dr. A. I have had him come to my son’s daycare and do talks. The hygienist does the checking and then brings in the Dr. they have to know what is going on. The office is great; the girls are there. I would love to work in an office that goes to all of those trips out of the country.
I do wish all the parents luck in the future with their children and hope that no other parent has had to go through what we have had to go through.
Everyone is talking about all the work done now. But what about the future
My son is a living example of problems after unnecessary treatment was done. We have had 5 dentist review the films that were taken before it was done and none of which was needed.
We trusted him. We felt comfortable with him. Now I as a parent have to live with myself that I aloud my child to undergo treatment that I was told necessary and it wasn't. I beat myself up everyday that I didn't get a second opinion.
I have friends that don't have a problem, and everything is ok. Then I talk to people and they say, yes my daughter did great he put her to sleep. My son did great they put him to sleep. My child did great they put them to sleep.
Have any of these people had another dentist review the mouth after.
My son was treated by both Dr. A & Dr. M.
Please all parents don’t feel the regrets that I have, always get a second opinion!!!!!!!

On another note: All parents that had Dr. A (kids teeth) should tell the child’s Doctor(ped). Always update your Ped. on stuff. That way all of the information will be with you always. Plus, your Ped needs to know so they can make a Medical Recommendation for your specific child. They can help you and guide you on the reports made.

If more work was required while under, I am quite certain Dr. Alalouf would have come out to tell you before moving forward with additional fillings, etc. You make him out that he just did this on his own without your consent.

I think you should call the Board and make an official complaint in addition to posting here. Maybe start by calling your pediatrician and asking for some advice. I'm sorry this happened to you, but please don't beat yourself up too much about it. There is no way you could have known that something may have been wrong.

All the complaints in the world will not rid this community of an amazing, caring, overly dedicated pediatric dentist. I advise everyone who is supporting Dr. A to call the Dental Board and/or the ADA and voice your opinions. I already have and they advised me that many parents are calling on his behalf. This really helps. We dont want to wait until Sept, we are trying to get him back sooner.

All right already. 100+ posts seem to cover all the ground there is on both sides. At this point, everyone can make up their own minds about whether to stay with this practice or not. Can't we all agree that both sides have legitimate points? Those who want to move to another practice have understandable concerns based on the dental board report or their own negative experiences and don't feel comfortable with the practice. Those who want to stay are basing it on their own positive experience and opinion of Dr. A. Why keep trying to convince the other side you're right? We as parents can use our own judgment. This a plea to stop -- the posts on both sides have gone over the top, IMO.

I think that it's easy to view him as kind and caring as long as your child did not undergo any unnecessary procedures. I think it's foolish to believe that the dental board or any other dentists are out to get him because they are jealous. I don't think the Dental Board takes this lightly. The number one duty of a licensing board is to "protect the public." I think it may be hard to believe that Dr. Alalouf has done the things that he's been accused of doing because he seems like a caring and concerned dentist. Let's not forget that people who we are supposed to be able to trust can do things that are hard to believe. Just because he has a wife and three children, does not make him immune to engaging in negligent or unethical behavior.

In response to the last post, he did the same thing to my three year old daughter in July, 2003. He did not come out of the operating room to get our consent to fill more cavities. He simply came out and informed us that 's what he had done. I, too, am sickened and saddened that we put her through unnecessary dental work and feel very fortunate that she came out of the procedure unscathed.

Everyone has the right to form their own opinion and make their own decisions, just don't belittle the parents who have questions about his practices. I do not consider myself a "housewife with nothing better to do." I am a concerned parent and a working/professional parent who is also licensed by a board under the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. These are very serious charges and should not be thought of as a "witch hunt."

Why do you say the Board treated him unfairly? He CHOSE not to respond to the allegations. So, unfortunately, we will never know his side of the story and will have to make our decisions based on what we DO know. He may have had his reasons not to present facts showing the report was wrong, but the fact is, he didn't.

Having a bunch of people tell the Board that DR A is really nice to their kids isn't very useful. I am sure he is nice, but a number of experts have concluded that he engaged in wrongdoing -- whether intentional or not.
