It really shouldn't be at that HHI and NW.

Shut up

WTF is your issue?

IMO, someone making $200K and only 2M NW and that has 2 kids, should not be paying for business or first class routinely (ie flying 3-4+ times per year) Most financial advisors would have a similar opinion. Just like someone making 200K shouldn't be spending $75K on a new vehicle. That money would be more beneficial going towards college savings/retirement savings.

DP. I fly business often. I spent 70k on a new car, bought a 1.2m house in a good school district. Income is 250k and financial goals are on track. Life is good. NW is 2m (not including home equity)
If you think this isn’t doable, you should take my classes on how to manage your money.

No thanks. Manage my money just fine. UHNW family now and made it to HNW just from saving/investing and not making more than $600K/year.

Trips to Asia make sense going business class but I can’t see forking out that kind of money to go to Europe

Is your number based on actual experience having reached it or is it a hypothetical question only for you at this point?

Our HHI is $575K and NW is $7.5M. We never fly coach. Not ever. If a particular flight doesn’t have business class or first class (usually small regional flights), we won’t even take it. I’d rather fly at a different time of day or to a nearby city. Our family of five flies about 6 times per year. Half domestic, half international. DH flies for business 1-2 times per month in addition to our personal travel. Always business or first.

Dealing with all the clueless and unprepared people that don’t regularly travel, the overcrowded club lounges, the chaotic boarding processes, the fake service animals, the lying and self-proclaimed disabled and military travelers pushing to the front of the line, the 3+ year-old lap children, the mediocre service, the bulkhead diaper changing, the garbage on-board food, etc…. It’s all too much. The only stress reliever is knowing that at least on-board we’ll have a reasonably elevated and comfortable experience. Couldn’t handle it otherwise.

We have a dedicated divided ETF that generates about $6K per month after taxes to help offset cost differences between coach and first.

Which ETF?

Does anyone else worry about how flying first class will impact their kids' sense of entitlement/privilege. We have around $2m hhi and have not flown first class with the kids. both DW and i are from pretty modest backgrounds and didn't have the means to fly first class until well into adulthood. Our sense is we appreciate the finer things a lot more having come to them later in life.

We sometimes fly business or first class but not always. Our 6 year old asks if we will be getting the seats that go all the way down. I do worry that she thinks this is the norm.

HHI of $350k and we started upgrading to first/business during COVID to be able to have more distance from others and also because people also started acting crazier than ever. Wanted to enjoy the experience and not have to stress like a PP above.

We try to use points as much as possible but will may to upgrade for flights over 4 hours unless it is unreasonably expensive.

We talk to DS about how his main job is to do his best at school and that he'll need to work hard to be able to achieve the same for his family someday. How fortunate we are, etc, etc.

I know this is totally wrong of me, but I hate it when there are kids flying in business/first.

We didn't start upgrading to business/first until your kids were 10-12+. So they sit back in coach/economy plus and we sit in business/first. They are well behaved and never had an issue. For Europe or Asia, they will get Premium select/equivalnt but not first/business. We have the same concerns and feel the kids don't need to be spoiled.

70k on a car will always be stupid. What a waste!

It’s all relative, isn’t it? We are not nearly as wealthy but my DS just went on a spring break trip that 90% of his classmates could never afford (high poverty school). Personally I think flying first is a waste of money no matter how rich unless you are flying overnight. Have these discussions so they understand. Say “instead of spending $15k on our tickets we are spending 5k and donating $10k to the children’s hospital.”

I can't decide if that post was satire or not. The idea of having a dedicated part of your portfolio, solely to "offset cost differences between coach and first" sure sounded ridiculous!

Why?

Our kids have flown first a few times when younger. They were always well behaved.
