PG is changing start and dismissal times with less than 6 months notice

Not even 6, theyll post on the 25/26th of April and school resumes August 23? So 4 months.

These start times suck. I was one of the posters that said we would adapt but my goodness. School starts for my elementary kids at 7:30am. They will have to wake up really early. In addition, aftercare is an absolute must. They get out at 1:40! They will be in aftercare for over 4 hours. This is insane.

Did you have a change from 7:45 or was it a change from a later start time.
Thankfully my kids schools didn't change at all but I know other are going to have a difficult adjustment.

Yep and Bowie HS changed from 815 to 730 poor kids. at least they dont need aftercare like ES/MS

I just dont think 730 should be a start time for any school. Its not enough sleep if a bus rider, which is the WHOLE reason the times got changed. Irony.

And aftercare will increase because its longer hours. And kids will be essentially indoors from 730-4/5pm if in aftercare. They'll transition fine to factory line work.

I'm pretty sure that Bowie is currently a 7:45 start time.

.

Again - plenty of us in PG ALREADY HAD THIS PROBLEM. We've had 7:30 starts forever. So, welcome to hell, I guess?

We live 8 mins from Bowie HS and my neighbor's kid gets on the bus to BHS at 6:24am every morning. It's horrendous.

I'm not in favor of elementary schools starting at 7:30am, just because we're talking about children ranging from 4-11 years old (if they're implementing all day Pre-K). I do think that's a bit early to wake up children at 6:30am, an hour before hand (possibly earlier if they're taking the bus) to go to school. I think 8:30a/9:30a is perfectly suitable. However, I don't think a 7:30am start time is a preposterous ask for a high schooler (children ranging from 13-18 years old). When I was in high school our first period bell rang at 7:25am, and this was in Montgomery County.

There is a large body of evidence that directly contradicts your thinking but regardless if you look at the bell times, the majority of high schools are moving from a 7:45 to a 7:30 start.

The upside of being in the first tier is that if they have enough drivers (which is one of the reasons they are shifting times) the buses should be on time. Later start schools often have longer bus delays because of a domino effect.

Bowie High School has some bus routes that are doubled up, so a driver will do an early route that starts at 6:30, drop those kids off early and then head out again to do a second route that would arrive before the first bell. Hopefully they will be able to eliminate those situations with the changes in routes and bell times.

Responding to this thread because I do not see anything else that has available discussion involving transportation. But anyway, it hasn't been a good start at all for the school year. 4 days in and 3 times, the bus never showed up. I talked to the bus driver who came 15 minutes early and he stated "Every day I go where they send me." Is everyone else experiencing issues with school bus transportation?

A lot of people are having trouble with transportation. This happens every year and for most routes it gets worked out in a couple of weeks. Our family has 3 schools and it's been a mixed bag.

School 1- AM and PM buses have come each day. AM bus is on time and PM bus has been mostly on time (9:30 start time Specialty Program)
School 2 - AM bus has come each day on time. We do not need transportation in the afternoon so I'm not sure how that is working out. (8:30 start Specialty Program)
School 3 - AM bus hasn't shown up at all. PM bus has shown up but the route is crazy and I have submitted a ticket to have it reviewed. (9:30 start time Specialty Program)

PG changed school times, bus routes, AND their IT system this year.

Its a clusterfuc4.

Many students werent enrolled properly and as enrollment changes kids have to be added to bus routes.

We dont get transportation provided and even drop off and pickup is a disaster because so many parents are choosing to drive their kids and the school cant handle that many cars in the neighborhood.

Im not sure if PG followed through with removing waivers but that may also be contributing to it. If they did the county only provides bussing for 50% of the population.

I am increasingly frustrated with dismissal because our dismissal changed from 2:25 to 2:40 and they still keep operating as if kids are supposed to be picked up by 230. Nope, school ends at 240 just like it begins at 830.
