Camilla apparently leaning into “The Queen” title

Camilla hasn't made one false step since she became a public person. Charles and Camila are happy and she was crowned Queen, not queen consort, and she is doing a bang up job.

Not for her sons and grandchildren! Diana would have still been a force in the monarch as mother/grandmother to heirs of the throne. Imagine how things would have played out for Meghan & Kate to have Diana as their MIL. So sad she missed out on happier decades to come.

Kate and Diana would have been at each others throats. Or actually, I don't think Kate would have married Will.

Absolutely not. Diana would've counseled Will that if he's making a girl wait around, she's not the one for him.

I can only imagine the advice Diana would give to a young Kate - "Darling, have a bit of self respect. He's making you wait. You deserve someone excited to be with you."

This is a fascinating thought experiment. I struggle to imagine what Diana would have thought of Kate. Your theory has some merit but I also think Diana would have recognized the things in Kate that made her well suited to what Diana knew more than anyone can be a very, very difficult role, and might have encouraged the match if she though William was really willing. I hav never known what to think of the William cheating rumors (could be true? could be tabloid bollocks?) but IF they are true and IF it's true that William kind of landed on Kate by default, I have to imagine that would have been triggering for Diana and hard for her to support/approve of.

Unpopular opinion that might send this thread off the rails: I think Diana would really like Meghan. Diana loved Hollywood, was very drawn to Americans generally, and I think shared some key personality traits with Meghan that would have made them fast friends. I think she would have been an ally to Meghan during the whole debacle in the UK with the press and the intense criticism especially during Meghan's pregnancy, and I think having Diana publicly pointing out the racism and asking for kindness would have gone a long way towards minimizing the attacks and also making Meghan feel like someone other than Harry had her back, which was really the source of the whole decision to leave.

Tbh, I see shades of Charles’s “logical decision” to marry Diana in William’s decision to marry Kate. It was without much passion. It was the “right” thing to do and the “appropriate” person.

Unlike Charles, I don’t think William is carrying on an affair. Charles was a selfish whiner and William seems a lot more disciplined. He knows any affair will get out to the tabloids and ruin his family dynamic. William had a terrible childhood and doesn’t want that for his kids. If William is miserable in his marriage, he learned from QEII the importance of suffering in silence as part of his duty. Dopey Charles didn’t learn that lesson.

I don’t dislike Camilla and I agree she has not made a misstep. She is however not queen, she is queen consort.

Queen consort is the wife of a king. Queen is a woman who was born to be queen in line of monarch. Camilla is queen consort.

Camilla was born into an aristo family that produced multiple Royal mistresses. She learned from the best. She’s been enmeshed in the peerage culture since birth. Her story is actually kind of amazing - it’s really about a multigenerational effort of one family to climb the Royal social ladder.

We all know the difference between a Queen monarch/regent and the consort/spouse. She does not reign and has not replaced QE2.

You can't be serious that things would play out exactly the same. If Diana had lived we probably never would have had Kate or Meghan. It wouldn't be an "all else equal but with Diana". All of it would have turned out differently.

DP. Anything is possible in the alternative ending. Diana could have married and divorced several times by now.

A queen can be either queen regnant or queen consort. Either can be Her Majesty The Queen.

I don’t think Will or Kate would be any different if Diana had lived. Will is pretty much exactly what he was destined to be and Kate I was the only sensible choice for him. Who knows about Harry but as second son he was probably always destined for some level of conflict and disappointment. I feel like Diana would be in for the drama though. She definitely had an element of sh-t stirrer about her. This is not from the TV show — this is from my following her in the press at the time. She had such a love hate relationship with the public attention. The one thing that would be different is that Camilla definitely would not be queen.

Someone insisted she was queen like Elizabeth rather than queen consort.

Um yes she has, they didn’t return the STOLEN JEWELS and instead flaunted them at the coronation, which spared no expense for the British public, and was an environmental strain in many ways

Then she did everything right.

Being a hypocrite is doing things right? They’ve been talking about “slimming down” the monarchy and paying more mind to how much expense the public bears, they’ve been yapping about cultural restoration and sensitivity, Charles has yammered on about giving a crap about the environment for decades. And then it’s go time and they’re like just kidding, pay for us to wear stolen jewels and who gives a fig about the planet.

I think William cheats. All his male role models have AND you can make the same argument about Charles that you are making about William. He also had a terrible childhood and saw his mother cheated on. I think the main difference is Charles is a liar to others and himself. If Wiliam cheats (which I think he does) he probably was honest with Kate from the beginning that would be part of the situation. Hence his decision to marry someone his own age rather than a 19 year old.
