Does DCUM skew super wealthy?

Anonymous
There was a thread a while back where people outright admitted to lying on the finance board. Don't sweat it, OP. It's like any other social media - don't believe everything you see.

For all the people on here who claim to have a high NW, they don’t seem to have a beyond basic knowledge of finance and investing. They magically have a 5M+ net worth in their mid 30’s through what seems like emotion based investing. And they supposedly have kids, a 200k HHI, and no family help. It’s really obvious they’re full of it when other posters ask them specific questions and they don’t really answer, or they answer vaguely with BS about the magic of compounding or something that doesn’t make sense with the numbers they throw out.

Seems like everyone here rakes in 500k and calls it middle-class. Is this the new normal? Is this board comprised of like a dozen big law people? What the heck?

Everybody lies.

We have a 100k hhi, 3 kids, a full time nanny, and we only eat organic paleo food. We summer on Cape Cod and have a net worth of 10 million. We still feel like we need to save more for retirement and our daughters wedding.

See, I can make up whatever I want.

1. DCUM skews wealthy.

2. There is a community of prolific posters here, as well as occasional posters. If the prolific ones post on many different financial threads, you have the impression they’re different people.

3. Posters tend to post if they can be the outlier, usually in a good way, or sometimes in a bad day, to counter the narrative of a post. So you have examples of very wealthy posters and low-income ones. The majority of whatever the topic is usually isn’t well-represented because once a few post, the rest don’t bother, since that’s not the most interesting position. So you may have a third of posters disclosing great wealth, a third relatively modest means, and a third middle class incomes/assets. Whereas the total DCUM population is maybe 75% middle class!

I hope this makes sense.

How do you know many people don’t lie? I’ve lied and pretended to be different posters several times, and I know I’m not the only troll.

It is an anonymous forum. You will not look any better inflating yourself because nobody knows who you are.

Its a forum for moms and dads living in a high cost area. Majority of posters are older, further ip in their careers and have double income households.

I assume most people have better things to do than lie to random people.

I assume most people tell the truth because they’re here to learn, get advice or make themselves feel superior.
