She wins as the songwriter. The song is eligible based on his cover being released this year, but this particular award goes to the person who wrote the song. Like Willie Nelson's version of "You Were Always on My Mind" won the same award in the 80s and that award (and the analogous categories at the Grammys) went to the songwriters, even though that song has been recorded probably dozens of times before Willie got to it.

This is even more confusing. Who is "he?" What cover are you talking about?

Luke Combs's cover.

THANK YOU, I didn't know who Luke Comb is since I don't listen to country music so I looked it up. What a beautiful voice and remake. Amazing, song he did an wonderful job, It might be better as a country song if that's even possible...

said no one ever before this moment in time

Pretty much the whole thread thinks he did a great job, which thread are you reading PP?

No one has said the song is better as a Luke Combs country hit.

I actually like his version more

I find it grating. He puts nothing into it. It’s like someone handed it to him, said “sing this” and they recorded it on the first take.

He does! I do not like the original song and I’m just not a fan of hers. I never liked give me one reason either. Everyone here praising her because she had 1, maybe 2 hits, lie 25-30 years ago. She’s essentially a one hit wonder.

And Luke combs sells out huge stadiums with constant hits.

Go figure.

To anyone who claims to LOVE Combs cover and HATES the original, I say that’s all we need to know about you.

I've recently started listening to country music and find it to be very soulful. While I prefer the TC original, this song slides very comfortably into the country genre.

Agree! He rocked it out. I also felt more passion in his voice than hers.

Unpopular opinion: The song is terrible no matter who sings it. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I also dislike Bob Dylan’s voice.

Yes, at least she gets some money, but her name isn't on the prize. I feel like it would be similar to a situation where I did all of the work for a project, and a colleague took all of the credit and everyone knew it and they patted me on the head.

She did win. For writing the song. First black female to win the award.

But he took the big prize of single of the year. For a version that's VERY much the same. She gets the pat-on-the-head prize.

Those prizes are pretty much equal in how the industry regards them.

Disliking Bob Dylan’s voice is not an unpopular opinion. I hate his voice and any cover version of one of his songs is always better than his original. I love Chapman’s voice, though.

You do seem like the kind of person that thinks everyone cares about your opinion. But trust me, we don’t.

Same. Bob Dylan doesn't enunciate his words clearly like Tracy does. You can understand every word she sings. A great female alto folk/pop singer.

Agree with this. I don't get why some like the remake. His wasn't great, imo. And the fact a guy was singing it made it seem off. It just didn't suit coming from him.

But to each his/her own. And if it means she's getting some recognition for it, great.
