How is this legal? Would love a fed to weigh in.

OP, I get that this is frustrating. It is a real headache to deal with. You have to track down what happened, which will likely mean a bunch of time corresponding with this "random town." That is annoying. Some venting would be warranted.

But I do suggest you take a little ownership here, rather than questioning the legality of......enforcing public safety laws. Many of the details you include are really not relevant. You DID do something illegal by parking in front of the hydrant. You (most likely) DID do something illegal to incur the ticket and then again by not responding to it. Rain, the need for bagels, and the fact that you were outside NYC is irrelevant.

You say this is the type of thing that "makes life not actually work." But what would REALLY not make life work is if everybody ignored tickets and blocked hydrants when it is more convenient for them.

op - i am not questioning blocking a hydrant. as i said i was in the car so could easily have moved the car if anyone needed the hydrant.
and the second thing - we could have done something terrible or nothing at all and the point is i have ZERO idea and could have lived my whole life not knowing because no one told us at any point that we had incurred a ticket. that is what i think is weird.

If the cop was able to approach your car without you realizing fast enough to pull away, you were creating a very dangerous situation. What do you think happens when there is an emergency - someone walks up calmly to your car and asks you to move it? The reason people are focused on this is because it is very difficult to believe you do not know about the other ticket when you so blatantly created a dangerous situation. There were two of you. You were in the car. Why did you not drive around the block while you waited?

You were likely mailed a ticket and ignored it or it got list in the mail. It sucks, but sounds like as soon as you pay it, you are clear. Have you looked to see if you can just pay it online?

Your NY State Driver License will be suspended if you fail to answer a ticket for a moving violation in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin. Your license will remain suspended until you answer the ticket.

Wow it is such a mystery!

There is it. Looks like you will have to contact the town police or look up their website to see how to pay your ticket or fight it. Best to just pay it but make sure doing that clears everything up. Oh a DH can not drive till this is taken care of…he could easily go to jail if pulled over or gets in an accident.

Lol, you know OP's DH is out there driving right now, feeling entitled to park in front of fire hydrants any time he wants to run into a store and pick something up. Ugh.

what is the worst case scenario here?
someone needs a hydrant and then they can easily get to it because we were IN THE CAR.

You broke the law, dimwit. NYC doesn't give a cr*p about your specialness. No parking in front of a hydrant means exactly what it says.

LOL. It's a fire hydrant. you don't park in front of t. It's irrelevant that OP was in the car. Do you also put your fat car in handicapped spots? I bet you do
