How horrible is the commute from Ashburn to DC

The Loudoun bus stopped right outside my office door, and those commuters got home in about the time I did (given I had to walk to/from metro and transfer lines). Plus they had nice cushy seats for the whole commute!

I know a lot of people who do this. It's more reliable than metro and they don't seem to mind it at all. They either sleep, listen to podcasts, or read. And, it doesn't really take as long as you would think.

I should say the people I know who make this commute make use of the time.
One takes bus / metro and watches Netflix or movies and the other two drive and enjoy the time as decompression (which I don’t totally understand because the drive can be stressful, but to each, his own…)

If you aren’t running late or have flexible start time return home time, it can be relaxing especially with young kids at home.

He leaves in morning, and can get to work between 9 and 1030 without much problem (call into any morning meeting if traffic is bad). Leaves work at 5ish, but his wife has the kid pickup, dinner covered, and activities kid shuffling - all he has planned for the evening is his drive home; so if he gets stuck in traffic, just chill till it clears. I did this before kids and it wasn’t bad, and certainly less stressful than BigLaw.

Why not move to Arlington instead? Commute is fine and you can probably get a big house just not a lot of land (esp. in the South), then sell again in ten years when you don't need to commute as much (and prices may have gone up a bunch over that decade also)?

+1, I am one of the posters in the western exurbs with kids (also a lawyer) and the key is that at least one parent is working from home each day and that there is flexibility with start/end times to your workday when you are in the office. It’s really not that bad. I am also one of those people that can decompress from the workday in a car with a podcast. If you are like that too OP all of the posts from people telling you that the commute will kill you are not applicable.

This post makes no sense. No one with three kids who lives in McLean and works in dc wants to move to ashburn. It just doesn’t happen.

WAZE or google during the commute time and get your true answer. Do a week or two to get an average.
Why haven't you thought of this?

Why end with criticism rather than simply trying to be helpful?

In Waze you can find the travel time for different days and times by choosing “Leave later” rather than “Go now” at the bottom after you put in the address. Where it will then say “Today” toward the upper right, tap the drop down to select a different day of the week.

Exactly the point of the previous post. Just do some research...look at different days and times! Its not hard to do on your own - FFS.

Why not move to Delaware or Richmond? Just buy or rent an indoor parking spot near work and park like a VW camper van in it.

I am serious. My current job has a condo across street which you can buy a spot for 50k. Owning spot gives you common area access, pool, gym, bathroom, shower, rooftop BBQ and lobby with WiFi. If only in office two days a week just stay in VW camper. The indoor spot don’t need heat and cool in summer.

Move to DC if you will work in DC.

Nah, have to live near or with my mother who is aging in Arlington.
