What’s the allure of Fairfax County

Sorry, I just cant get past the idea that you grew up in this area and are just now discovering fairfax county. You basically live here.

1.1 million people live in Fairfax County. They don't all live next to I-66.

It's a very diverse place in all ways. OP, you need to drive into Clifton and walk around. Then tell me there is no "allure" there. Or walk around the neighborhoods near Wolf Trap (and go to Meadowlark Park near there). Or walk around Great Falls and visit the national park. Or go out to Bull Run. Visit the winery next door. Enjoy the views. These are all parts of Fairfax County. And many more beautiful areas along the Potomac (including the path there). You can find any ethnic food you want here, many ethnic grocery stores, stores of any kind, doctors, very good hospitals, proximity to airports (including Dulles), community parks and pools, and on and on. The quality of life is very good. And I say this as a transplant. You need to explore more of the county. Plus it has proximity to many good jobs.

I mean, I grew up in Fairfax and live in North Arlington now and raised my kids here and it’s all just kind of the same. My DH grew up in Springfield and Falls Church City. We are endlessly amused by the folks who move here from wherever and the put so much stock in differentiating between the various neighborhoods. We all just live in the ‘burbs of NoVa folks. Meet you for boba after our Costco run!

Can’t get it done in DC? Can’t get it done near your second home?

It clearly isn’t a big job if you’re just walking around until it’s complete. You went to FFX for an oil change? Are there no places in DC, Arlington, Silver Spring?

And why do you need a car anyway? I thought part of the perk of DC was all that walkability and public transport.

I can’t imagine living somewhere that doesn’t even have basic things like an auto shop. I guess I like living in my part of FFX because I can walk to metro, the bus stop, the grocery store, the library, my kids’ excellent public school, restaurants and coffee shops, and even the auto shop. Plus I have a garage for my car on my .30 acre property.

Haha burn.

I’ve never had a raccoon sized rat cross my path while walking around Fairfax, unlike in DC, so there’s that.

This, and also jobs. Fairfax County for decades has been highly successful in attracting white collar jobs. Lots of technology jobs are along the Dulles Access Highway, along 28, in Tysons, etc. The American Legion bridge is congested weekdays with lots of cars of people who live in MD and work in VA; some but fewer cars do the inverse commute. Many people live in Fairfax County primarily to have a good commute to work.

Nice try, lose a$$.

I brought the car back to the dealer. And I need a car for my second home in the country, obviously.

Oh, well, thanks for buying your car out here and paying the sales taxes here. You are welcome to come out to our lousy area anytime to buy the stuff you need and pay taxes. But maybe complain to the dealer (or car company) about their location? You want to go to a low overhead store and then you complain that it's in a low overhead area? Get real.

It’s a BMW dealer.

If you’re a government contractor there are a lot of sites all over NoVa centered around Fairfax county, pretty good location for minimizing commute in this case. I currently work in Reston and live 10-15 minutes away in eastern Loudoun. At this point I have no desire to live in or close to DC. I’m a homebody so it’s not like I care about the amenities and charm of those zip codes and my paycheck goes a lot farther here when it comes to housing. Also this area is more balanced politically, DC/Arlington/Alexandria/Bethesda are too far left for my taste.

I love strip malls and don't understand the hate on this board- they are everywhere because they are convenient. Easy to park and access grocery stores, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, etc. What would you prefer? A mall? Or one stand alone store, then another down the road, etc...?
I also love FFX County- something for everyone- you can live on a 5 acre lot in the country or in a dense more urban feeling Merrifield and everything in between.

One of my favorite things about Fairfax County is I am 25 mins in either direction to a major airport.

I’m really not. I just don’t “get” Fairfax.

Sure you are. You walked around "Merrifield," an industrial/commercial area next to 66, and complained about it looking like strip malls and crap. Yes, that's like walking from Shirlington up the trail to Columbia Pike and not getting the allure of Arlington.

I’ve been all over Fairfax. This time Merrifield, yes. Virtually all of it is horrifying.

Lady, I get that you want to make a big impression with your post but as you keep using the term "horrifying" you are making yourself seem like a wound tight, high maintenance twit. Were you really "horrified" walking around? Was it all too much for you?! You certainly do sound like a certain type that resides in North Arlington.

Ha! Of course it is. There really is something about people who drive BMWs

Strip malls are the height of convenience at its finest. They feed your soul. Drive in. Park. Hit your fav retailers for food and goods. Walk back to your car with your goodies, and a quick drive home.
