BTSN: I fricking LOVE Langley

Nobody is talking about bussing across the county, except for Great Falls being bussed to Langley. We are talking about probably changing a 4 mile bus ride to a 6 mile bus ride just to bring a little balance to the schools.

Langley is not the best school because of the fabulous teachers (though there may be many good teachers there). The school looks good because of the student demographics. The more challenging students have been kept out.

We all know that. Anyone with any sense at all knows that. We also know that no low income housing is close to Langley--at least no one has illustrated that it is a logical move.

And, I know that busing low income students long distances is not a good idea for lots of reasons. Those in Great Falls have been doing this for years --and it did not start as a segregation plan, but as a necessary move because of Langley's location. It is still the logical solution--Herndon is close to capacity and has always been close or over capacity. The projections are uncertain and undependable. I am not a Langley or a McLean parent and do not understand the reasons that more McLean was not moved to Langley--that is what would seem logical to me. But, I have lived through "boundary studies" and understand the community and neighborhood issues that arise. And, I also understand the great desire to stay in the school you are in.

That is one thing that I have not seen on these forums. i have not seen anyone claim they want to be redistricted to another school. They just want to send other communities to other schools.

In fact, years ago, at the first redistricting meeting I went to, one of my friends commented that everyone wants to stay at their own school--even those whose kids go to what were considered schools that were not very good.

It appears you haven’t been paying much attention. These things aren’t great mysteries. You just choose to ignore inconvenient facts.

There was more to your post than that, so clearly you are playing a game here.

As for people asking to be moved, because FCPS has only followed a practice over the last 15 years of moving kids to wealthier schools (wealthier schools like West Springfield near low-income schools like Lewis get additions instead), there absolutely have been people asking to be moved.

It didn’t impress me much.

I wouldn’t be shocked if occasionally a kid drew a bad hand and got mostly mediocre teachers, after all most schools have at least some.
