Does one or two Bs mean UVA is off the table?

UVA is not like T20 private.
It's perfectly fine especially for in-state

UVA is T25 of all schools, private and public, in the US per USNWR and no 3 of all publics

UVA is much easier to get in compared to other T25 especially for In-State.
One or two Bs are perfectly OK for In-State UVA.

i wouldn't be so sure. Last year's incoming class had a 4.53 GPA at the 75th percentile, a 1520 on the SAT and a 34 on the ACT, meaning 25% had even higher. It is not an easy admit.

I don’t think 1 or 2 Bs means it’s off the table. To get into any highly selective school you need more than grades though. Compelling essays, recommendations etc.

And UVA cares A LOT about which classes you take. So I think someone who takes the right classes, and has excellent other stuff (essays etc), 1 or 2 Bs won’t make a difference.

Of course it's not an easy admit at all.
However it's significantly easier compared to other T25 especially for instate.

Of course kids get admitted with a few B's. I know of a few.

agree. in-state admission was OK, but the out-of-state admission was insane or brutal.

No. The USNWR list we are talking about is almost exclusively private at the T1-25 so no “in-state” with the exception of Cal, UCLA and Michigan.

It probably depends on when you got them, what subjects they are in, and what you want to study. Bs in science for an engineering major aren’t the same as Bs in Spanish for the same kid.

You say this like “top privates” are more rigorous or something. They aren’t.

Sorry but yes they are. No retesting like in public. Work is harder than things I saw in college and zero room for error.

+1

I teach public, kids in private. Way, way more difficult and colleges know this. Public engages in grade inflation, private grade deflation.

You can keep telling yourself that, but statistics will continue to say otherwise.

Yep, in fact grade inflation is 3 times higher in private schools

They have far less grade inflation (both actual and structural) than MCPS, where grade inflation has increased dramatically during the past two decades. My kid did both, and their grades were lower at private (along with those of their friends). Still had a strong UW GPA (which colleges/universities look at more closely than weighted GPA). Went to UVA.

Grade inflation is 3 times higher in private schools.

Let me guess, your kid doesn’t go to Sidwell, NCS or STA?

My DS got in last year with 3 Bs from MCPS. He had a very rigorous schedule, very strong SATs, and fine but not stand out sports/extracurriculars.
